Solid Axle Subaru...

After hours of reading and searching the board I cant find any confirmation that anyone has a solid axled swapped subaru, at least not front and rear... It seems a few have tried or started the project only to abandon it for whatever reason...

 

I just want to know if there are any front and rear swapped solid axle subaru's running around before I commit to my build...

Yeah I have read about some solid rear swaps but nothing front... I just want to know what I am up against so I can maybe push the bar a little higher...

 

I know a guy with some toy axles with 5.29 detroits front and rear, that would work perfect if only I can get him to take the time and yank them from under his scrapped project...

I already have a cust fram underneath the body and a sammy Tcase...

 

set up now is...

6inch lift

sammy tcase

4.111 diffs, rear welded and front lsd

6 x5.5 lug conversion

15inch Enkeis

29x10.50 super swampper tsl's

etc....

 

 

I just have a good hardcore offraoding crowd around me and I am ready to go to the next level, 16 inches of articulation and independent supension just isn't cutting it any more....

I think my biggest issue will be swapping the 99 RS eingine and then figuring out the steering... Me and my friend are in conflict on how to do the steering, I want to run a modifide rack and pinion just because it would be a little less work but my friend who is more the expert says I should run a gearbox, I just want to take the path of least work for the moment...

Run a box with the straightaxle, you'll never be able to get a rack to actuate the steering right and the car will be a danger on the road or trail. Unless, of course, you mount the rack on the axle, and use a really long slip joint to attach to the steering column..........

The later is what I had planned to some extent, with a little modification and making the setup a bit beefer.... However my friend who is more the expert doesn't believe it will work and thinks the tierods are to small and will break, so he thinks I should run the box.... Last thing I want is something dangerous to me and more importantly others..

99RS = 2.2turbo? Somehow I think you'd need more low end torque to push a locked rear and front LSD or locked front around. I'd just but a yota, but I see what you want, and I think it would rock.

 

Here in aus I'd get a Toyota 4x4 Diesel... you poor folks in the US never got the diesels though huh? :( 3L turbo diesel REALLY kicks a$$.

Well I have considered the power I will be needing and the torquey RS motor seems it will do the trick considering my friends nissand v6 has just a hair more horsepower and torque... if need be it can get a supercharger or maybe a flat 6 in there but I just dont think I want to go much higher on the d/r tranny... and considering the gear ratio on the diffs would be at least 5.29's and a 4-1 sammy Tcase I dont think I will have a low end problem, at least it wouldn't seem that way from what I am seeing now, tires probably wont be any larger than 35x12.50...

 

But none the less its still a work in progress that wont get a major undertaking until mid to late October and we shall se how it goes then....

There's DeathHatch's hatch....HUGE, and with solid front and rear axles. I think he had some trouble with the steering linkage, however....

 

I know he's got some awesome pictures of how he mounted all the leaf spring shackles and stuff in his photo gallery here on the board.

 

 

and yes, of course a full frame has to be built. mostly because that's the only way to mount a divorced transfer case, which is more than essential in this sort of a project.

Wow I really like that rig of DeathHatch's, from the photos it doesn't look like the driveshafts were in nor was there steering, does anyone know if this thing runs and drives? Guess I will be sending him a pm later on...

That used to be my old Hatch. Then he butchered it:-\ Its still not running, like said by Chux, he has steering to figure out yet. All the work was done by someone else. Maybe he'll get tired of it and sell it. Maybe I'll buy it back:brow:

Btw, my new Hatch doesnt have a full frame and I'm running a Nissan T-Case.

I have a Nissan pickup frame and axles I will be slippin under my UOO and will use the stock suubie rack and pinion with the nissan rod ends , it will be a redneck hybred gizmo , will be justas strong or stronger then stock subaru set up , the stock nissan box is right in the way where the drivers side engine cylinder bank is

Well hopefully my hybrd hydro steering idea will work out and save me alot of time...

 

I hope I am inspired enough to document everything pretty closely and maybe set up some jigs so I can reproduce what I am making incause others are interested...

 

A good friend of mmine will be helping me with the entire setup and he has one if not the most built Nissan rigs east of the Mississippi :banana: , he is very damn knowledgeable and his fabrication quality is awesome... So maybe I can get him into of the idea of fabricating and producing some things for subarus....

The transfer case you use in a the subie setup is a 2:1 right? I guess that plus the 5.29's will give good enough gearing.

 

Keep us updated when things start moving along. I am/was thinking of a 6" lift with the tcase, but it would look a little to illegal here :(

yes the tcase I have now is 2:1 but I will probably pull it and regear to something like 4:1...
