RallyKeith
So, I decided to ask the group for the inside poop on this. One of the input shaft bearings is getting noisy in my 95 Legacy. With 198K on the clock, and some neglect on my part (and the previous owner) it's no surprise it's got problems. My dad has a trans from his 91 Legacy that I could just swap in, but I think the final drive ratios are different. I think I've got a 4.11 final drive, and the 91's had 3.90 but he seems to think his was 4.11 So boys and girls, tell me the truth... Manarius
Any year 1990-2007 will fit, depending on how much work you want to do. If you don't want to replace the rear diff, 95-99 5MT's are 4.11 as I recall - So you'd need a 5MT from a 95-99 Legacy.. From 90-94, they're 3.90. idosubaru
if you have a known good trans sitting there, i'd definitely use it. swap in the rear diff to match and you're golden. you can ask the off-road guru's what difference changing from 4.11 to 3.90 would make, but it won't be very much. of course verify and then double check all your diff ratios and make certain they match. subeman90
90-94 legacy 5 speeds were 4.11 and the TURBO 91-94 were 3.90 Trust me on this one.....i have been on this road before. FWIW, If you can find a 3.90 turbo tranny you will give up a little off the line but your mileage will go up greatly (I did this swap and couldn't believe my eyes/calculations)

ShawnW
Ask a dealership to run your VIN number or tranny code sticker to check ratio.
Hocrest
Is there a tag on the rear diff?
subeman90
between what shawn said and what Hocrest said....that is what i would do. OR you could think of it this way: it isn't going to be a 3.9 b/c it isn't a turbo, and it "shouldn't" be a 4.44 since it isn't an OB or GT so in theroy it should be a 4.11. I'd still ask the dealer to run the tranny code or look for the sticker on the diff like Hocrest and shawn said though.
johnceggleston
when searching car-part.com, everything indicates that 95 a/t is 4.11, 95 m/t is 3.9. the 3.9 shows up in the description of rear "carrier" for 95 m/t thru 97 m/t more often than any other ratio. 95 a/t thru 98 a/t is 4.11 for 2.2L cars. this is not a garrantee. i'd call the dealer parts dept. EDIT: i also found a reference to the 4:44 ratio in the 96-99 2.5L a/t as 40 x9 teeth. if this is the case then the 4:11 ratio will have 37 teeth on the ring gear and 9 on the pinion; and the 3:9 will have 35 teeth on the ring gear and 9 on the pinion. any one know if this is acurate? and is it more or less work to swap a ring gear than a rear diff. ?? my guess is more. but knowlege is power, and more is better. john between what shawn said and what Hocrest said....that is what i would do.
