How do I mount this radio in a loyale?

I thought of every means to bolt back end of radio up to hold it and .. there isn't a way I can think of. To let the screws mounted in plastic do the job will not last. I already have broken holes where original subaru radio cover mounted. Any ideas?

You hold it in your right hand, hold your arm high behind you and throw it. Hehe Just kidding. But really why dont you just get a nice deck. Then you can get a mounting kit and mount it with the given hardware. FYI, Bestbuy does sell a deck mounting kit for the brat for about 12-20.

yes.. it does look the subaru dash kit.. if it's not, get one and make life easy. the deck cage has the hooks that bend in to hold it to the new dash kit the 4 screws for the dash kit.. in my car it has been plenty secure over harsh terrain..

It is in the mounting holes for subaru, in a subaru mount.Never used it, don't know where it came from ... Oh the life of a junk man  .I found it in a pile of stuff I have kept. It looks like the bottom part would fit an old equalizer (real thin). I did get an ac delco to fit ,where it wasn't supposed to, this seems easier. I may go through the plastic front with two more long screws,to the real mounts halfway to heater box, and bracket the radio down to the plastic, which can be strengthened with some thin aluminum I have. That will give it 4 mounting points, and the brackets to keep the back end up.The radio did say 50x4 channell and my speakers are already four channel and much larger than oem watts. My dad owned it, did nothing but news, never a cd! so 1999 date is no concern. I even found a site that has replacement parts and wiring hookups cheap. There is also two leads for an amp- maybe squeeze a small one underneath (although I don't need it). For now, like the past 18 months, the old reliable delco is still getting stations 110 miles away.I have never done that with any radio but an airplanes. :) I give this one a few months, say until the middle of january, before the micronic pansiness shows its true colors  I do not have good luck with these little radios with big numbers...

ok. This may be a long shot.... Anybody out there actually have a wiring harness for this style panasonic. I tried to go by a websites color coding, and have doubts about the dots in photo, the rest I am confident with. After seeing price for for harness for this radio, which may need repair. I really want to hack it to get going and verify it is ok. My dad owned it, the wiring in his tractor trailer is there to stay.. with original harness.

He never used whole radio, I have no clue if it is worth a dime.Anybody?

There is only one other 16pin harness for panasonic, the one I have here has been out the longest. So... i am hoping to get lucky here.

The above photo is correct. Upon ebay for 8 bucks I got a harness. Upon google search for this radio- Nada, zip zilch, zero. I couldn't believe it. 11/05/99 is on the back of radio, the year 2000 made the same crap, different millenium- completely shadowing the above panasonic.. I am getting to some point here... Don't just let that 130 dollar radio go becuase of a "1999" build. 35x4 may be sending me back to the trusty delco. If I see the headlights flicker just once...

Anybody have big radios in the old sube, non-shared ground (custom speaker wiring into normal)?

I had an old chevy with a huge radio, I resorted to bigger amps from alternator....

the stereo you have there is out of a peterbuilt semi... or some caterpillar equipment of some type. your best bet would be to get the old harness out of the truck it was in or contact a semi truck dealer for the harness.

I got one from ebay. Perfect color coded wiring to go with it. Sometimes this net is a lifesaver! I even got a fender for my old sube for 1 dollar.

My dad swapped it out of his international, he broke some dainty buttons, but I found a way to make it better than original, with original buttons. There is two tiny fork type pieces holding each and every one of the buttons to suspend and bounce to pressing them. I was sure he mentioned it being big sound for a little radio, so I kept it.

Anyone know what 35x4 watt does in a little sube? I really don't want flickering lights. It does mention a 1k ohm resistor where the fuse would go, I bet that is the surge flicker killer.

That little thing will NOT flicker your lights. No worries.

thanks, I hope it goes well too. I am waiting on a wired harness through snail mail.I wouldn't call it little though. I am wondering if because it is oem it ended up a bit different in the tractor trailer it came from. I am hoping it was an amp this was hooked up to. Incredibly loud.25x4 isn't even little for a 12v car. I am certain 45x4 is max to have real numbers on a 10 amp fuse in a 12 volt system (one radio circuit). 35w is getting close to a light flicker.:) I have had the rockford fosgates and pyle drivers and even ticketed for noise. Quite ridiculous. the trick to make it work very powerfully was dropping to 2ohm. The 4ohm all in one four channel radio is huge at 35w.

bgd: if it does have any power issues (which i doubt) you can always go to the junkyard and pick up an alternator from a mid 80s-early 90s maxima. 90 amps, and it bolts in and fits great. the only hard parts are:

A) pulley swap, not such a huge deal if you have "alternator/starter/battery" shops in your area still... and even if not, it can be done at home with some ingenuity.. and

B) you have to slip the belt onto the pulley before threading either of the bolts. It works fine, tensions fine, i have an almost new belt (~5K miles on it and no _apparent_ stretch) and if it were looser it would probably be easier.

so two MINIMAL amounts of effort for an otherwise straight swap.

take some pictures of what you do, as I have to put a stereo into mine, and I have a kit.. but no DIN cage for the stereo. I am using the small space below to install a cupholder out of a toyota corolla

I thought of it, but the 2wd Loyale is on fire with lack of electrical gadgets already. I am guessing the bigger radio will be a pleasant thing to add. The new alternator I put in needs a job to do

That is very nice. The radio I am using is a stubby standard length, so normal bezel depth will be ok... I did read something disturbing:

" WHEN PARKED

Parking in direct sunlight can produce very high temperatures inside

your vehicle.Give the interior a chance to cool down before switching

the unit on."

Quote from the owners manual. I am keeping that old delco setup handy :)

Question: The bezel depth seems to be an issue for older subes and new radios.. am I just getting lucky with after market stuff or what? Is it normally a problem? I have not encountered it yet. Is it a problem for cars older than loyales?

Its a problem with pretty much the EA82 soobs. The Loyales do not have any differences in the depth. I dunno about any older than that, but those you have to usually cut a hole in the dash. Since pretty much all of these soobs were made to fit tape decks and not CDs, most CD players stick out a bit. The aftermarket dash kits seem to do a decent job though of giving a bit more room.

Only trouble I had when mounting my CD player is that the antenna cable hits against something, and causes the dash kit to bow a little.

I added my experience with this to my website. Those "little big" radios aren't cheap  , so I added the extras I did, on top of a normal setup, to hopefully help longevity. One page is for a delco radio swap from gm cars, and the other is for more modern radios, and of course that has many options.

I don't know as I am being precise enough to be truly informative. Anything I could add? My motivation is the result of 3 radios in 2 soobs, my third lasting the longest without shared speaker ground. My spejer wire color codes in my 93 couldn't be matched to make sense, and that darn shared ground made it next to impossible to map out. I ran all my own, about 40 feet.

Great idea with that window frame stuff. That thing looks like it'd stay in there during an earthquake.

Looks like one could also probably use the factor subaru plastic cover over the radio, cut a hole in it big enough for the radio, and fabricate some mounting brackets onto the radio for a more streamlined look.

I agree on those AC Delco radios being tough and lasting a long time. At least they last a bit longer than the Subaru stuff.

  • 2 months later...

To actually mount the new radio in my 92 loyale, I took the old one out, and used the stock brackets on the new radio. They actually screwed right in almost perfect. To get the extra depth, I used the farthest back position, which then I drilled a hole in the bracket to use a 2nd theaded hole in the radio. It looked pretty standard, check out this option. For the deeper bezel, I will probally do something very similar to 2.7s homemade dash kit. See pic above! I will try to post a pic of the brackets I am talking about.

I remember this thread. I went back to the ac delco from a 96 chevy corsica... perfect fit (strangely). I have found other ac delco parts made just for soobs, I am no longer surprised at how good this radio fit. That would have been nice as an oem radio. Strong runner, I seem to break the little ones with big power numbers. It has been real warm lately, maybe this january is a good time for a spring time radio project. My new old soob still has oem radio.

got that spring time feeling in the air, windows down some favorite tunes... ya know what I mean? :)

Heck yeah! My 92 has the stock 2 speaker system. Big 8 watt speakers with no cones left! Still works ok, its a radio. But I want to bump some Marly and the like. I really like to cruise around and "relax". A good stereo helps out. I am putting a pioneer cd player in. I had it and the speakers are currenttly being gathered from friends, ebay, ect! Can't wait:cool:
