FT4WD center diff question

Phizinza - just to make doublely sure - you realise that these boxes have a poor low range? They low is not nearly as good as the standard L Series/MY D/R boxes.

I went through this fantastic process in my L Series recently - I swapped the low range from a standard D/R L box to the Full Time Box. Bloody beautiful box to drive with.

Just for the record

Standard L Series Full Time Low : 1.196:1

Standard L Series Part Time Low : 1.592:1

The MY low is something like 1.4xx:1

If fitting to an L Series, you have to modify the existing shifter and get different CVs. I bought MPFI complete shafts (25 spline on the output from the box). Just to make your day these boxes are rarer than rocking horse sh*t in Australia but they are out there.

Don't know if you already knew that - but just thought I'd let you know ;)

(For the benefit of those who don't know what I am talking about, L Series = EA82, MY = EA81)

Quickly scanned but couldnt see anyone replying to the Q about how the diff lock actuates. On the centre console there is a diff lock switch - this operates a vacuum solenoid on the front left strut tower. From this two vacuum lines run down to a diaphraghm that pushes and pulls the diff lock lever on the box.

Thanks fangster, I knew all of that already by looking at the pictures and reading the forums. But it's good you brought it up in this topic for others to read later while searching. Like I said in the Offroad Section, I want a FT4WD box for my idea, but I don't plan on using it. ;)

I don't care if the gearbox has screwed gears. I still want it. I wonder how much I will be up for

Thanks everyone. Once again, you've been a GREAT help :burnout:

  • 1 month later...

Sorry to bring this to the top again, just wanted to ask another question...

I have a lead on a 5sp FT4WD box that is single range, with diff lock. It's a import box. So I am assuming is MUST of come out of a XT6? Is this the only car this gearbox came in?

And what ratio is this box? 3.7 or 3.9, or could it be either?

Thanks again.

actually...IIRC the non-D/R FT4WD 5MT is more common than the D/R one. as the D/R one only came in RXs....

It's just that I haven't heard much about the S/R ones much. So I assumed they were rare. But I guess because they weren't as good means not as many people talk abou them as much...

Can any one tell me if the single range pinion shaft in a FT4WD S/R box is interchangable with the pinion shaft from the FT4WD D/R gearbox? They are the type that slide through the middle of the output gear shaft right?
