tahoesoob
Any ways this is my first asian car, i am new here, not new to furoms though, i have owned several old bmw's and thats what i currently drive (so i geuss you could say im a european car guy). anyways enough about that, i just bought an '86 GL wagon, maroon color. I will post pics tommorow, its bone stock, and looks like a ************ bomb (what can you excpect it was $300) and i plan to leave it that way, i bought it for a snow car. Put a new timing belt on, filters, fluids.....the usaul. I ordered some bridgestone blizzaks and will be installing them next weekend. I am also going to replace the exaust system.....which i have a few questions on. anyways just making my mark on the map, any tips on these cars would be much appreciated, so far my opinion on these cars is they are tanks! Very well designed. My first question is on the exaust system.....its got a ton of leaks and needs to be completly redone. Now, how hard is it to smog these cars in Calif.? I want to put an aftermarket catalytic converter on it and a cheapo $15 summit racing muffler. If they are difficult to smog then i will just get the factory cat, i can get them for $160.......is that a good price? many thanks. -christoph. PS. I dont want to spend more on this car than i spent on my new skis.
Sweet82
Welcome to the board! Has the car had a history of smog problems? If the cat is still usable, I'd still use it, replace the pipes and put on a muffler. If you find you really do have some problems, try doing a search and see what other folks have done. The SubaruJunkie (lives near you) had a few problems getting his wagon passed the smog police a while back. He may have some insight as to getting it to pass, if it has problems. My 82 has CA emissions on it and never had a problem with smog. Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--Never a problem 84 GL Mad Max--Needed an air suction valve to pass emissions. 01 Forester--Cleaner than clean
joostvdw
If you run into a problem with smog testing, you could always turn down the mixture: if you have a carbed engine, that's easy, is you have MPFI, also easy, on the MAF sensor, there is a white flatheadscrew looking thingy, on the front, next to the big connector, using a forked screwdriver, you can turn this in or out, that will adjust your mixture just set it lean for the smog test, remember the number of turns, when you've passed it, turn it up again and you're golden, just make sure that the car runs, just
cubastreet
Watch out - they're pretty addictive those old subbies.
zyewdall
I've never had much trouble getting them to pass emissions, carbed or SPFI ones. Usually under a quarter of the limit here in colorado. Even a '84 GL that I just put a cheap aftermarket cat and muffler on and enough flex pipe to make MOST of the exhaust come out the back. Yes, they can be addictive. Drive it around in the snow a bit with those blizzaks on there and laugh at the SUV's spinning out. As long as you don't get high centered, you should be pretty unstoppable. Anyways.....thanks for all the advise, i didnt get time to post pics today.
