Newbie with a dashboard rattle

Recommended Posts

Hi. Sorry if this doesn't belong here but I need help before I loose my mind! I have a new 2005 legacy sedan (I love it!) and the dashboard is rattling where the front left pillar and dashboard meet. Anyone else experiencing this and had it fixed? It will go weeks with no noise and then it won't stop. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help on this!

Here's a maybe. Our intermittent 'dashboard rattle' is actually a heat shield on the front pipes under the car. The sound gets telegraphed into the interior and presents as a dashboard rattle.

Check under the car for a loose heatshield, or a rock kicked up into the shielding somewhere.

Survey says..... WRONG:grin: (sorry, good suggestion, but in this case there is a documented documented issue with the redesigned legacy dash.)

Mine just started doing it last week. It's a common problem, and from what I've read there is a TSB for it. Just take it back to the dealership and they should be able to take care of it. I'll have mine fixed next time it needs an oil change.

If you search on http://www.nasioc.com you will probably find multiple fixes relatively quickly.

Ay ay ay.....

If I wanted to learn more about my Legacy I'd try something like:

or

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/

This isn't to say that they have nothing over there, but what is there is not much.

What is a "TSB"?

Thanks!

Sorry, you did newbie.

TSB =

Technical

Service

Bulletin

It's what car companies do for minor problems that aren't safety related. It's not a re-call or something that must be fixed. It's kind of a note to the dealer to say "Hey, seeing this problem a lot. Here's how to fix it."

The BBS is only for 89-94 BC/BF Legacy's. Very rare chance of finding someone that intimately knows the rattle in a 2005 Legacy. Nasioc has lots of newer Subaru owners, thus the suggestion (I'm not familiar with late model Legacy forums, I don't have one).

Where did you read or hear about this particular TSB? I just checked NHTSA.dot.gov and they list recalls but ALSO service bulletins but I didn't find reference to this issue. I haven't experienced the noise on my 05 OB and am feeling cheated.:-\

I have to eat my words a little. Someone made reference to a TSB in this thread:

http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10794&highlight=dash+rattle

However, I have not found anything myslef. Reading that thread more completely I don't see it.

Had the same problem in my 2005 Legacy. Two problems actually. One was a squeak at the A-pillars that we called the "two mice having sex" squeek. The second was a rattle against the windshield.

Took the dealer about 10 days to really get it sorted out. We did two things. First, we placed a strip of adhesive-backed insulation foam between the dash and the A-pillars. Don't use the adhesive, you may want to pull them out later.

Second, the dealer placed a length of rubber tubing between the dash and the windshield. I can't tell you what diameter he ended up using, but it really did the trick and is completely invisible.
