Hello all,

I have two questions:

1) Can anyone give me an estimate on replacing both rack-and-pinion boots? I called around and was given anywhere from $100 to $200 per side. The car is Subaru Legacy L 95 FWD.

2) Does anyone know a reliable mechanic in DC area? I am willing to travel if it takes that.

Thanks a lot!

That seems high, have you checked with Midas or Pep Boys?

why are you replacing the boots? one of the few things i've learned on this forum is that the suggested solution doesn't always solve the problem.

Both boots are torn in half, and I hear the clanking sound from around the driver side tierod. That's the reason. Oh, and this is one of the reasons my Subie didn't pass the DC inspection.

Thanks!

U grease it up every so often? Any difference? Might be damaged who knows.

kvaleras,

If the boots are shot I would be suspect of the ball and socket joint on the inner tie rod end. This could possibly be the source of the clanking sound you are hearing. Now they are a bit of a pain to replace (recently did the passenger side on my 97), so if you can get a shop to do it for the $100 a side, it might be worth it. Oh the inner tie rod is around $50 ish.
