black smoke out tail pipe

Recommended Posts

we did get gas from a different station , 87 octine, , i think the idle problem is that i am running 87 octine instead of 90 or higher, on my 88 turbo , the station she always gets it from has 10% ethanol in it , mpg is 23-24 city.the air cleaner is a k-n ,cleaned out 5,000mi ago

Yeah sounds like its running reall really rich if you can notice the smoke... not just on the pipe but in the air behind you... HOLY CRAP MAN! if it dogged down before it that would be a tell-tale sign that it dumped too much fuel in right before!

FWIIW, I run all of my turbos on 87 Octane, including using some of our 10% ethanol blend (I try to avoid that as it is not economical in our market). I have had no running isues that were fuel-related, but the CTS corrosion has been issues on at least 2 of the cars, and I have had spark plug and wires fail when I stressed them with injector cleaner.

Oh, another possibility might be a stuck injector that freed up. Might be a bit of a longshot, but there aren't too many things on the EA82Ts that should make the car belch black smoke. MAF, CTS, ignition system, injectors are the short list.
