They're excellent motors. As good as the 2.2 liter engine they're based off of (have virtually EVERYTHING in common actually except cylinder bore).

I have one sitting in my garage that I hope to have a turbo on and in a GF Impreza wagon before next year is over. It has 230k miles and I was told it ran fine before being removed, it was just leaking oil everywhere.

I bought a 94 Impreza with the 1.8 engine and manual transmission for rallycross purposes. The engine is just great; much more willing to rev than the 2.2 on my Legacy; but you'll notice it hasn't got quite as much low end torque. An odd thing, it came with low profile 16" tires/wheels and the car was a stone...wouldn't get out of its own way. When I installed 14" tires and wheels (stock size), the car changed completely and it had lots of pickup. I'm not the expert on engines but I suspect it might even be more reliable than the 2.2. One other thing; gets great gas mileage compared to the 2.2; 28+ highway compared to my wife's Impreza at 24.

We have a 1982 Wagon GL with the 1.8L in it. 150k on her and she never complains. Gets 35 mpg. Can't find anything wrong with it to fix, except: The keyhole is reamed out, so we start it with a paperclip, and it does have a leak in the gas tank above 1/3 full. Only things outside of routine maint. we have ever done to the car: Wheel bearings, axles, exhaust, 1 rebuilt carb. We love her and she loves us.......forever, until rust do we part.:burnout:
