Is there a ball bearing behind the oil pump??

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm putting new timing belts, water pump and oil pump on my '94 Loyale. While degreasing the bare front of the engine, a ball bearing fell out from somewhere. I've had a look in my Haynes manual but do not see it.

Does anyone know if this goes behind the oil pump, like some sort of check ball?

Or maybe somewhere else?

Or maybe it was there from days of old, buried in layers of gunk.

Thanks in advance!

Dave

wanna say hey from TN cuz there's not many soob nuts down here in the southeast... and I have no idea where that could have fallen from. I've had an ea82 apart before... but I am not familiar with any small ball bearings towards the front of the eingine. don't think there's any behind the oil pump. could very well have been buried in the gunk... and could have been from something important cuz i don't know!!! lol

youre talking about a steel ball about 3/8-1/2 inch in diameter?? the belt tensioners use ball bearings, but nothing THAT big.. it was probably an odd chunk of road debris/old mechanic leftover???? but I cant imagine what it might be otherwise. if you see lots of people viewing this thread, and no answers, that what i would take it to be (especially since i have now gone and put my nose out. If I'm wrong, someone is BOUND to chime in, right?)

Daeron,

Actually, it's 1/4 inch diameter. Looks just like the one on the oil pump filter face (which is still there).

I started all this because all of a sudden, the car started making noise like valves out of adjustment, but I could isolate the source. Manual said oil pump can cause this type noise.

Maybe there are (were) 2 such metal balls in the oil pump?? and that is the problem.

the noise you're hearing are probably the HLA, (hydraulic lash adjusters) and they can make noise if they're dirty of when the oil pump sucks in air through the gasket, a very common and easy to fix problem. please use the search "TOD" of "tick of death" that should yield you a couple of topics, and I even believe there was a recent one...
