Electric fan question

Recommended Posts

I have a 92 loyale and it has one electric fan and one mechanical fan. I am wanting to get rid of the mechanical fan and posable add a second electric fan. My question is, is the single electric fan only operational when the AC is on or is it solely controlled by the temp sensor in the radiator.

it is only controlled by the thermoswitch in the radiator, which is why they had the clutch fan. You can use a second electric fan from an EA81 car with AC. It will be in the same place as where your clutch fan is but it is slimmer and will fit, unlike using a regular electric fan that your car already has, which is not slim enough.

not true. the electric fan is controled by the thrmo swithc but it also comes on as soon as you turn the A/C on.

Now mine doesn't come on all the time like most AC electric fans in other cars. It seems to only come on after sitting for a little bit running like it is more ran just from the temp switch. So in a since I answered my own question, I was more wondering if with the AC off will the fan switch on if it got to warm. And true I could try this myself, but some how I dont think they would want me running outside and playing with my car while im at work. crazy i know.

yes, it will switch on without the AC on. that is its primary function, regardless of whether the AC switches it on as well or not. if it does not, you need a new thermoswitch.

EA82 cars with no AC had only the electric fan, the clutch fan was the "add-on" for the additional capacity needed, as someone stated above.

That's what I was hoping. I am wanting to set up a dual fan set up using the the power that would be powering the single fan to turn on a set relays to turn on both fans. That or maybe I will leave the one electric fan alone and set up the other one to operate when the AC is on. Yeah now that I think about it that's a better plan.

my electric fan is wired to spin constantly with the key in the acceosries or on position.. i jumpered the plug to my thermoswitch because my thermoswitch was bad and the one on the JY radiator had a different plug. for my buck, id leave one on the thermoswitch, and set one up to come on with the AC, or via an override switch. its a good idea to use a relay for the fan rather than run that kind of amperage thru a switch in your cabin, though.. for tips on that do a search with my name and relay to find a good post i made about installing one on my starter.

I've just reversed myself on doing the dual electric fans and have reinstalled the mechanical clutch fan (a little nightmare putting that back on) on my 87 3-door, which has ac. I did this because I noticed that both sides of my ac metalic hoses were hot after a short drive. I think that without a sufficient amount of cooling air blowing over the compressor area, that engine heat will just conductively heat things too much.

My 87 dl wagon with no ac, no power steering and no clutch fan is so much easier to work on - too bad it has a hitachi carb.

This is why I was going to wire it so if the AC is on the second fan would be running all the time. then if the AC is off the single fan would do all the cooling which is more then enough because that's what they put on non ACed stuff.
