Intermittent problem with AC

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with the AC that may be coneected with the internal temperature sensor. SOmetimes my AC will come on when I hit Auto, even when it is warm in the car. WHen it is really hot inside the car (over 100) then it will kick in. Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

This is on a 2001 Outback with the 3.0 engine

Do you ever here a 'whooshing' or 'gurgling' noise when the A/C DOES engage?

Severla people with H6 Outbacks (including my wife) have reported leaking discharge and suction hoses from the compressor. perhaps you eventually lost enough refrigerant to have total failure (actually, a pressure switch is preventing operation)

I dunno - just a thought.

Does the A/C work properly when it's in A/C mode or Recirculate? (I'm not sure what options you've got, cause I haven't seen an auto system:o)

If there's a problem with the blend door or the vacuum hose/vacuum motor connected to it, it can seem like the A/C is not on when it is. The heater can easily overpower the A/C if the blend door is opened just a crack, letting hot air mix with the cold air.

Check the hoses coming from your compressor when it should be running. One should be pretty hot and one should be pretty cold.
