Subaru_Mechanic
ok first thing i did was take out the spare tire, thats where my custom air filter box goes. then if you want a good cheap paint job and hate scuffs, then do what i did and buy the bed liner in a spray can. it looks great and doesnt scuff. and if you hate goin wheelin and comin back with soaked carpet. pull it and lay down some dynamat, then spray the dynamat with the bed liner (acts as a silencer) then get some spray adhesive and lay down custom cut marine carpet (for boats) i just cut the peaces and meand the corners/seams with the bedliner. (i have sprayed the head liner and the back liner) and i have way more for the exterior.. wanna know my mods pm me or just reply:headbang:
WagonsOnly
Er...drive carefully--the spare tire is actually part of your protection in a crash. I'm not pulling that out of my hat or idly speculating--later Subaru owners' manuals actually say so. :-/
Subaru_Mechanic
huh didnt even think of that. but im fabing up some heavy duty bumpers that link into the engine compartment. Phizinza
The spare tire sits where the EA81 ones do right? Well then I'd say you'd have to crash the car almost to the point you'd die at to get it's added safety. The protection it offers me is when I get a flat. But because my 6 stud conversion I don't have a spare at the moment. Have you done the air box yet? I'm always interested in seeing what people have come up with. Pics? WagonsOnly
he spare tire sits where the EA81 ones do right? Not quite, the tire sits a bit lower, more similar to the EA82 design--the tire is positioned so that the rim will theoretically prevent the engine from going through the firewall and into your lap. Personally in a car that old I'll take all the protection I can get Also remember that there's a lot less crumple room on a Gen 1 as compared to the EA81s. Subaru_Mechanic
ha not quite. it doesnt matter when i have bumper supports runing threw the engine compartment to the "frame" theres no worries. Zefy
just for reference the spare tire will push the engine down under the car instead of into your lap in a head on collision... having a big beafy bumper will help that, buuuut if it does get by the bumper it will still help... note: only works when the tire is bolted down! and if i were you, i would save that spot for something else... it would be best to put it somewhere that gets nice cold air... not right behind the engine... you might wanna consider relocating your battery to the spare tire spot and running your intake box where the battery is... nice cold(er) air... but really, these motors only have 65hp... it's not going to make a whole heck of a difference... i am interested in your interior setup... i recently stripped my interior out and now the thing is empty... but now i realize that getting carpet isn't an easy (or cheap) task... perhaps your method will work for me too... pics of everything would be sweet! Subaru_Mechanic
ill take pics today. and this bumper design is proven more then good. and the air intake wont matter where its located cause its not breathing under the hood, secret:grin: ... and lining the interrior is cool it looks good but it you dont put somthing down like dynamat first, you will hear alot of road noise. but the rattle can bedliner looks really good on the body. my hood is sprayed with it. Subaru_Mechanic
ok i took the dash and ac unit out due to it smellin like piss and no heat. i found a rats nest in it awhile back and vaccumed it out. i cleaned the hoses and so on. when pulled it today i took the ac unit apart and found more of the rats nest on top on the heater core. so i cleaned it and now i gotta clean the rest of the dash area put mesh vents over my fresh air ports. and before the dash goes back in im gonna fix the cracks and paint it. so i sanded the cracks then bondo'd them and painted then with krylon H2O paint. for a anti crack and extra protectant. i have carpet to put on the dash! its sweet lookin. i got 1 progress pic so far i will have more tomarrow. shift
so how exactly did you make it look like that? you said you sanded it down, bondoed it and sprayed it with some crack resistant paint? im very interested on how you did that. and you covered it with some carpet? GoldDiggerRoo
You know they make a plastic dash cap that could've eliminated you whole bondo step and the need for the carpet. Can't wait to see it all back together. Do you have any exterior pics of you Brat, I'm always interested in seeing another early Brat.
Subaru_Mechanic
yea thats exactly what i did. i sanded the cracks then filled them with bondo so they wouldnt show up threw the material then sprayed the whole think with krylon H2O paint (white) it helps reflect heat and its thick so it helps stop cracking (the paint works great on plastic, its washable). i was lookin for some kind of material to cover the dash with and found carpet... too thick and rugged looking, so i found my seat covers i never used and cut em up to fit the dash. i bought adhesive spray and presed the fabric on. after that it leaves you with one sweet lookin dash. do you want to see pics of it instaled? so how exactly did you make it look like that? you said you sanded it down, bondoed it and sprayed it with some crack resistant paint? im very interested on how you did that. and you covered it with some carpet? Zefy
looks good! to bad you couldn't do the entire dash with just one piece of fabric... i might have to steal that idea of yours... and hey, refering to your steering issues and bashing your fingers on stuff... NO WONDER! look at the tiny little steering wheel! (looks pretty good though...:-p )
DerFahrer
I wouldn't do the fabric personally, but I will definitely be using similar methods to restore my dash. That, and the condition of the front seats, is my main concern about the interior condition.
Subaru_Mechanic
oh i know. i was tryin to figure out a way to eliminate seams.. im still woking on it too. and the whole steering thing, i had a stock wheel in it when i riped stuff... this one is padded:grin: it helps and i dont feel all the vibrations. fabric is good for the dash because its washable (cleaner and a shop vac) it doesnt fade as easy. and it give a cool padded comfort feel that the girls like. (theroy tested and proven:lol: ) looks good! to bad you couldn't do the entire dash with just one piece of fabric... i might have to steal that idea of yours... and hey, refering to your steering issues and bashing your fingers on stuff...
