Syonyk
Um... yuck. 140k miles or so on the engine (EA82). I pulled it apart to reseal it. It's... really gross inside. Is this normal, or does this speak to neglect on the part of the previous owners in terms of oil changes & such? This is WHY I was doing the reseal: This was a puddle of oil in the bellhousing: Inside the bellhousing, partially cleaned: Yea. Watch for that rear main. It's nasty when it leaks. -=Russ=-
ShawnW
Signs of neglect and cheap oil.
bgd73
no doubt neglect, and a bit of heat too... I never had the oil pan off yet, nice pic
Davalos
Ack ... My sube looks kinda almost identical to that one ...
GeneralDisorder
Carbonized oil - pretty normal. Every engine I've torn down looked pretty much the same. Castrol super clean will take it off easily. GD
torxxx
man I swear you took those pics from my car. it looks identical. problem with mine, its had a slight rod knock for almost a year now. No use in resealing an engine that could die at any time. lol
moosens
You might want to take the "oil sump pipe O ring challenge". Pain to get off most of the time. Old oil doesn't look too hideous.I've had some that were running fine looked that just like that.
hatchsub
wow thats pretty nasty. When i pulled the pan on my first suby (86 EA81 hatch) that had been sitting for 3 years before i got it it was clean enough to eat off of. Guess they took good care of it..and it had 120k on it too. The FSM actually reccomends against EVER removing the pickup tube. Apparenty it's just not easy to get it sealed up again. GD
Durania
Looks like the engine bay of my EA-81 hatch. Oil spewed from the pan gasket and all over. BTW: Anyone wants it come and get it $400.
Snowman
That looks like most of the engines I've had apart. The only one that didn't look like that had been running Mobil 1 synthetic for about 20,000 miles, which cleaned up everything inside amazingly well. Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Well, both my subies got Oil under the Engine, (It seems to Come out Like Sweat) but, my EA82 was a li´l bit Cleaner when I took off the Oil Pan, two years ago... Maybe is ´cos I use two times a year, a QMI "Motor Flush" ... A cousin that works in Costa Rica, told me that some Oil Brands have more tendences to leave strong yellow barnish & gum in the Oil Passages; he told me that the Worst on that aspect is Peenzoil, and the Cleaner one is Chevron... I used many, many years Chevron 20W-50, but now, I do preffer Motul Brand; (It Hides the "Tick of Death" Sound Better) it´s cleaner. Well, Time to Cleanin´ and Also I suggest that when you make the engine to Run Again, Use a Motor Flush in Next oil Change. Good Luck!
DasWaff
I'm a big believer in pulling the oil pan and cleaning the scunge off the bottom and cleaning the oil pickup screen... But maybe that's just me, the Felix Unger of oil. Also wanted to give this site a bump on USMB again, for those who may not have seen it. Pretty cool, and the site has lots of info and is not a giant sales pitch. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ DasWaff

I've been told by a couple of reasonably reliable sources that Pennzoil has a higher paraffin content than other oils, which causes more buildup inside the engine.
