WoodsWagon
I found a legacy with a rear diff that had cooling finns all over the cover. Does this mean that it's a viscous LSD? or just a normal open one?
pearlm30
Can you post a picture of the diff? I found a legacy with a rear diff that had cooling finns all over the cover. jamal
clean off the back, there is a sticker that will say the ratio and if it is LSD.
svxpert
<<clean off the back, there is a sticker that will say the ratio and if it is LSD.>> yeah, the sticker thing stopped after the 1994 legacy, and the 1997 SVX, i've never seen a sticker on an impreza. all other (non loyale) subaru's have a two character letter painted on the top of the diff. not able to see it unless you take down the diff. WoodsWagon
It looked like a normal diff, but the aluminum cover had finns like a heatsink running vertically. No sticker, and I couldn't jack the car up to spin the wheels.

WoodsWagon
The car was pretty smashed up, but I think it was one of the newer ones with the squarer headights, mabe 2001? Only the cover had cooling fins.
edrach
Rotate one wheel by hand and see which way the other wheel turns. If it turns in the same direction the diff is LSD or VLSD. If it turns in opposite direction it's Open.

tmp
My 05 lgt has a finned cover(with lsd) and so did our 03 leg sedan(no lsd), but they have a different housing style and the cover bolt patteren has changed. Ive noticed the outbacks still have the older housing style. Hope this helps.
Storm
My 96 Impreza also has the finned cover. It's an open diff most likely....unless the model is an LS trim level...even then it could be open type. Did you notice if the bearing cups are bolt on or star shaped like the front diff bearings? WoodsWagon
I'll take a look. What ratio would it be?
Storm
I'll take a look. What ratio would it be?Depends on what trans. Auto is probably 4.11:1 and Manual is probably 3.90:1. I wouldn't know for sure. Jay Storm
