jon38iowa
I had my 2.5 non- turbo SOHC Engine rebuilt last week. It runs great, plenty of power, and is pleasant to drive. However, as before the engine is loud, sounds more like a truck(roar), though there is no longer any knock noise. My question is this: Is there a method for quieting this motor, at least a little. The exhaust is perfect (had it checked by two different shops). Would a new intake manifold make any difference and are there any upgrades available? Is sound insulation available for the the inside doors helpful? Would having the windows tinted with the a reflective coating make any real change? Thanks again for any info, this site is extemely helpful!
kimokalihi
Are you talking about making the engine quiter overall or quiter inside the cabin? If you want it quiter inside the car, you need to get your hands on a lot of sound deadening, I suggest RAAMmat. Very good stuff and not as expensive as dynamat. http://raammat.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi You're gonna want to at least do the firewall and the floor and probably the tranny as well. I'm going to do my whole car eventually...I just talked to rick and he said 190 bucks should do the firewall and floor for the front seats. That's including a roll of RAAMmat and a roll of ensolite and a can of high quality adhesive. There will be some leftovers probably that you can put on your doors or whatever you please. Now if you're trying to quiet the actual noise the engine is producing...I have no idea. Is your airbox bolted down all the way? LOL:D

But, for now since it is almost winter here, I will focus on the engine. The Air box is tight and I replaced the hood insulation. Thanks for the info, I will save this for future reference! When does this roar noise or loudness happen? nipper Its most noticeable under acceleration. The engine lacks smoothness, not rough running, but just not quite as smooth as I would expect. I am thinking about replacing the sensors in the intake, and fuel injectors. The Forester is not as well insulated as the Leggacy or Impresa, thus I will be working on this issue as well. BruceyWV
I have to give a second recommendation for raammat. Rick is a great guy to deal with. With Lesbaru down I raammatted the doors, the trunk, the hatch, and the front floor of my (extremely large) wagon, and it only cost me 250$ Even with parts of the car disasembled, inside the car is now quiter than inside my house. BruceyWV
NONE of the work was really hard, it was just time consuming. Espaically if you were careful. (Near the end I wasnt, and broke a handle, oh well. trip to the junkyard for me.) But All thats required for disasembling the doors is taking out 2 screws and a trim piece, pulling out some pull tabs all along the bottom/side edges, then pulling the piece up. It took me roughly a week of work on and off. Now that I know what the hell I'm doing, I could probably disasemble the door in 5 minutes. Well, take it apart enough to install the mat at least. The real time consumer was cutting little pieces to fit through the access holes on the door.
