WoodsWagon
I just tore apart a 1998 2.5L. Exhaust was blowing into the coolant. I took off the heads, and there wasn't an obvious breach in the headgaskets. I didn't see any cracks in the head either. The headgasket appears to be a 3layer, outer layers definiatly some sort of steel materiel. One of the outer layers was loose from the "fire ring" around the cyl, but that might have happened when I took the head off. What i'm wondering is if this gasket is origional or the "MLS" gasket. ShawnW
That sounds like the updated gasket. Failure could be warped gasket surfaces, clogged radiator, bad water pump, aftermarket thermostat, blown hose.......cant blame the gasket 100%. nipper
Exhaust gasses in the coolant is the headgasket, the question is what caused it to go. If it is an updated gasket, had you had any cooling system work done? nipper
Commuter
The latest gaskets are a 4 layer design. The original out of my 97 was 3 layer. There was some black 'stuff' ringed around the cylinder holes on the original. The new one looked to have some kind of a fine grit coating around the cylinders. The last I new, the latest part no. ended in 610. Commuter
WoodsWagon
The headgaskets were coated in some black stuff, I figured it was paint. They're probably stock then. What's the easiest way to recognize the new style gaskets? Can you still buy the old style ones on accident?

This way you dont get any old stock. nipper
