Finally got my codes!

Recommended Posts

Could they make the little light on the module any harder to see? Anyway, I got the codes on my 92 Loyale SPFI  and they are 34 and 35, the EGR solenoid and the Purge Solenoid  . Can anyone tell me where these devices are and if I have to get them from Subaru or are they available from other parts stores? Maybe someone here has some good ones they would not mind parting with cheap? At least I got a working clock thanks to msteel.

Here is a link to a picture of them. They should be near the throttle body. The air connections are very fragile. Do not put any side force on them. The dealer price for new ones is more than you may want to know so if you can find some used ones it would be great. Some folks have used the same type of parts from Nissons I think. You just need to swap the connector.

You can do a search here if you want more info on these things. The error codes are generated when the ECU doesn't see the correct current in the circuit to them.

make sure the connections and electrical harness for each is fine, the code doesn't mean the sensor is bad. it's getting a bad reading from that circuit, usually it's the sensor, but not always. in these two cases it probably is more likely than other sensors. might want to plug in "purge solenoid" in the search feature and see what you find. unfortunately you can't search for "EGR" do to limitations of the search function - it doesn't like 3 letter acronyms.

Spockva, glad you're happy with the clock.

I at one time drove my Loyale over 1000 miles with the purge solenoid bypassed while I looked for a replacement. I did not notice any diffeence in performance or fuel mileage. In fact I wondered if my mileage wasn't better that trip. As far as the EGR solenoid goes, some say it is needed, others say not.

If you decide to do without but want the Check Engine light to go off you can replace the solenoid with a resistor Like GD said, and the ECU will be tricked into thinking it is there and functioning properly.

They are expensive to get new (I think the dealer told me about $90). Some have found a similar solenoid from another car (Toyota comes to mind) that has worked fine and been cheaper. That scenario likely requires an alternate mounting location.

It may also be helpful to know that the EGR and purge solenoids are functionally identical, although they do have a different electrical connector. Actually the pins are the same but the housing is a different shape. You can splice a different connector or swap the pins to different housing to convert one to the other.

more info?

Replacing the solenoids with about a 40 ohm, 5 watt resistor should make the ECU happy and turn off the error code. I would just make it a temporary fix if you do that. Until you can get a replacement part.

Before doing anything I would make sure that the wire connections between the ECU and the solenoids is ok.
