ahhhhg stupid car RUnning HOT

Recommended Posts

I swear im starting to regret ever buying this thing. it runs hot, and iv replaced the radiator cap, water pump, and hoses. The gauge says like 3/4 hot and its got heat blowing out. But the hoses in the car arnt THAT hot, and its not boiling over or anything. It smell hot tho, its not using any coolant. Could i have a bad thermostat? Radiator? Mabye even my a/f mixture is off from my coolant temp sensor causing my car to run lean and get hot? i pulled out one of the front plugs and they were coverd with white. it only gets hot when driving it. not when idling. highway it gets 3/4 of the gauge easy with the heat on high. What about air bubbles?? Im getting soooo mad with this car.... Also does the electric fan for the a/c even do anything for cooling ,or just come on for the a/c? cause i have mine removed at the moment. Also i notice it sometimes has a tiny little backfire almost, like a pop pop pop from the passenger side head area and it goes down the exhaust. it doesnt do it ALL the time tho, but a fair ammount

Notice any oil around the head gaskets (esp on the bottom). My 87 XT was doing the same thing and everyone says head gaskets so that is my project for next weekend...

It sounds like to me your radiator is clogged up / bad. Look at cleaning out your current radiator or getting a new one.

You also could have a bad thermostat. Could be stuck half way open.

The t-stat could be stuck... I would replace it just to be sure. Radiator can be checked by feeling the cooling fins, moving hands top to bottom (or vice versa) feeling for bands of different temperatures. A new radiator costs less than blowing and replacing HGs...

the engine has 25k on it, could the headgaskets go running it at 3/4 of the gauge often? ill go with the Thermostat and try a different radiator. so running leans probably not going to make this thing run that much hotter right. Where do you guys find 2 row radiators for cheap?

Two row radiators aren't necesarily cheap, but I got mine from radiatorexpress.com for my XT (mostly, because they're the only place who stocked one for an XT). I hear radiatorbarn.com is good as well.

You may just need a new thermostat. Take the old one out and replace it with an OEM thermostat. Then see what happens.

Change the thermostat first thing. New thermostat will cost you maybe around $15 dollars. There an easy swap and will save you alot of headache from blown headgaskets. If that don't work next thing is the radiator. You do these things and are still having trouble, come back to the forum and we can go from there.

Sorry to through in "severe" repair conditions - miss read your original post and thought you'd already done the t stat and checked the rad...my bad

Not only a Bad Thermostat... Also bad Timing, bad EGR, and a Clogged Exhaust pipes can contribute to Overheat your Engine, and there is one more thing:

If your Radiator have a Heavy Mixture of Coolant / Water (More than 70% of Coolant) and the engine have passed much time without start (For example, when you leave your car for more than a month without startin` it`s engine) the Coolant will for sure, make a Cystals Build Up, leavin` it with poor performance...

I was havin` same problem with my EA82, the year when Hurricane Mitch destroyed almost all our Roads and bridges (1998) my EA82 sat in the Garage for almost six months... and Radiator build up Destroyed it hability to flow water... I changed the whole Rad. with a Double one (Metallic) Made in Honduras, and Removed Forever the Thermostat (I live in the Caribbean Tropics) and Problem Solved.

I suggest you to Check Thermostat, and Timin` ...

Good Luck! :)

alright, my EGR solenoid is broken. My Cam timing is dead on, but my Disty timing is fully advanced or the car runs like ************ for some reason. My coolants all new, but the car sat for like a year so i see what ur saying about the clogged radiator. my fluids 50/50. My exhaust im defintly not sure on, the Cat still says SUBARU on it, lol so it could be original, with 258k on it

i had the same problem and it was a bad thermostat but make sure you get one from the dealer

ok new thermostat does the exact same thing, and it got to 3/4 of the gauge and i open the hood and the coolant in the radiators bubbling like its boiling. overflow tank is full, and has a bubble or 2 every so many seconds, im guessing from the boiling coolant, but im not losing ANY coolant at all, and its not burning it, its not being pushed out the overflow or anything, what the hells going on!

If you have a good 50-50 mix of antifreeze and it isn't acidic, letting a car sit for 30 years won't affect the radiator. I've done exactly that! Check for bubbles in your radiator while it's warm and idling. If you see any bubbles, you have a bad head gasket and that will cause it to overheat.

Yeah... does sound like headgaskets... you could also check for exhaustgases in the radiator with a special magical color tool ... but bubbles work for me.... your timings fully advanced??? are you knocking or no???? also if its running like******************************************* sorry got carried away.. then check for vaccum leaks... you can use brake cleaner to spray on all of the vaccum hoses and if the engine raises rpm then you know you have found the leak.... although there are some that are still mysterious.....

ok, when its running, no bubbles what so ever, i ran the car and reved it with the cap off when its cold or cool, today i had the cap off till it hit almost 1/2 on the gauge and not a single bubble, and it doesnt boil or bubble when the temp stays lower than 3/4. The only bubbles i get is when it hits 3/4 and i turn the car off and its boiling. Im getting a new radiator tomarrow, i found some big cold spots on it. the Rebuilt engine has like 22-25k on it. when idling and driving around town usually the temp stays fairly low, its going 35-60 that it starts to climb, or hard driving. So im gonna get a j/y radiator tomarrow and hope for the best. I can also hear the coolant wooshing in the heater core, i need to find a nice steep hill and burp it....

I really wouldnt be surprised if theres some vacuum leaks, i definatly need to check on it, it hesitates pretty badly but i thought it was most likley the Coolant temp sensor since mines hella corroded but im waiting on a new plug to splice in.

Dissimilar metals + liquid = battery. Unless the coolant is changed every couple years the zinc in it will deplete to levels where the aluminium could be damaged.

alright, ill try the radiator. Im not sure on the cat, it doesnt glow and ill hit it to see if it rattles i guess.

Having the timing fully advanced and not a single bit of knock is a tad worrysome, and on regular, lol. Im gonna fill it up with premium and get it properly timed and check all my vacuum lines.

I don't think your cat is a problem. My cat disassembled itself and plugged the exhaust pipe. It wouldn't hardly go up the mountain roads in Colorado but it didn't overheat. After removing the debris out of the exhaust pipe, horsepower greatly increased.

BTW I run 12 to 14 degrees BTDC and run regular. Anything less = DOG
