MAYFLY
I'm getting chirping and grinding noises from my front wheel bearing on my 81 wagon- any advice on how to service this?
GeneralDisorder
Probably the outer bearing has been contaminated by water/dirt. That's the usual problem. Replace both bearings and seals on that side - Autozone sells the Timken bearings for about $11 each, and with seals it's about $27 per wheel plus grease to redo them up right. It's a bit easier if you drive the bearings out with the knuckle off the car, but not entirely neccesary if you are in a hurry. GD
Ross
If you're stingey like me, go to a bearing manufacturer/supplier (SKF does wheel bearing kits for soobs)- you'll get them quite a bit cheaper.
Indrid cold
I'm getting chirping and grinding noises from my front wheel bearing on my 81 wagon- any advice on how to service this? Welcome to the site since this is your 3rd post... yea.. sounds like bearing and if you do a search in the "Search" box, you should find ton's of info. If you read a chiltons they say you need to take to shop and have it pressed off etc... nah.. just read the past posts and it will tell you how. If you havn't done it before... good time to learn and it isn't that diffecult. Plan on your first set taking a long time if your new... the next set you will be a pro... do the search and then bond with your Subee...

heartless
bearings arent all that hard to do, just time consuming if you have never done it before. it is MUCH easier to do if the knuckle is off the car. Just make sure you pack the new bearings well with fresh grease - messy job to be sure, but vital for bearing life, disposable gloves are great for this job. do a search for wheel bearings - LOTS of info out there. idosubaru
EA82 hubs can be found for $25-$35 used, i imagine EA81's shouldn't be too far from that? this gives you a few options. first you can just install a used hub if you don't want to mess with bearings. another option is to install new bearings in the used hub. you can take a couple days and don't have to worry about your car being down. finish the hub on your own time and swap hubs when you're done. no down time is good if you only have one vehicle. pay attention to your axle and axle nut - make sure it's installed properly and the nut is tight. hubs are ruined if the nut backs off. also might want to check your ball joints while the hub is coming off. Ross
You talking like motion industries, applied industrial or what? I'm from New Zealand, and have never heard of either of them.... Edit: errr.. that is the name of a popular bearing manufacturer not a profanity!

Edit: errr.. that is the name of a popular bearing manufacturer not a profanity! The reason that I was asking is that I work for one of the largest bearing distrubutors and in the world and what we do is house the parts for the supplier until they are needed. The company makes them, sells them to us, we sell them to supplier, supplier sells them to the customer. SKF is a big one where I work as well as timken. Its basically many many different companies under one warehouse. I work for INA im sure somone has heard of them, our sister company in the buidling is F.A.G. Motion industries is a big supplier is why I was asking. Check our their website if you dont believe me. http://www.F A G.com minus the spaces.
