Overcharging

Featured Replies

I have two cars now that are overcharging. My 88 Rx I have an after market gauge on and when it gets about 15 I'll turn something on... Normally it doesn't do it, but it comes and goes.... it also turns the dash lights on lightly, and I'm sure the RX needs an alt. It has a new T plug.

My wagon is a bit different. Yesterday it started charging at 16-17 volts at random... no idiot lights. I checked it with a volt meter and it is very high... Checked the T plug and it looks good, cleaned and reapplied dielectric.... Is it also the Alt, or is there something else I might check? I just need to finish converting my XT6 alt:rolleyes:

I believe that your Alt. should put out about 13-15 volts, and that number is regulated by your voltage regulator, I'd check your regulator, mine went out and I fried my lights and battery.

had a rebuilt alt blow its internal regulator and was throwing 16-17 like yours - had ALL my lights on, including the after market driving lights, stereo, heater fan, everything I could think of to get it home, pulled the alt, took it in to where i bought it, they tested and said "holy crap!" - got a new one for free.

would take the alternator out, and take it in to your fav parts place and have them test it for ya...it is a well known fact that the guages in these older soobs are not 100% accurate.

i have an RX alt phil. came off of kevin's RX. yours for shipping (fits in a flat rate priority mail box for $8.10).

sounds like alt problems to me on them all. fusible links will start to blow if it sustains the high voltage (seen it before).

Auto Zone sells voltage regulators for about $20. The alternator is easy to disassemble and repair.
