My wipers are messed up...

Recommended Posts

I have since taken the wiper controller apart, thinking I could solder something- a source of time for intermittent (which is working on my car- it is just the park function doing half of its job)would have at a minumum resistors or somethng fixable- but oh no. There was another proprietary little box inside the controller, then I imagined another box inside that box, and another box inside that one, infinitely there to torture my DIY attitude all the way to fractal geomotry under a micronic miscroscope.

An old soob trivia Q: Where is the source of time for intermittent wipers on a 1987 GL carbed , with no ecu?

Ok, in my 87 RX my wipers have 3 positions. Off, Lo, and High.

I seem to remember my last RX had intermittant, as does my '86 wagon with the controls on the dash.

Also, the wipers don't ever return, then stop whenever you turn it to off. Whether they be up, down, or half way in between. I also seem to remember my last 87 RX not doing this.

So... what wiper control stalk to I need to get, and why was this ever changed? Will simply changing out the stalk give me both intermittant wipers, and the ability to turn the wiper off at any time and have them return to their parked position?

This is just the begining of a very long list for this blasted car...

The park mechanisim is its own switch in the wiper motor. Whne the wiper switch is off, it sends power to the park switch in the wiper motor. This switch powers the motor untill the cam on the gear breaks the switch.

No park is usually because this switch in the motor itself has failed, or the connection is corroded.

Glad I saw this so I could update.

I pulled the wiper control box, and multifunction switch out of a GL-10. Got home, put the mulitifunction switch in. Wipers wouldn't do variable intermittent, nor would they park.

Then i remembered the wiper control box, and after hunting around for the plug, I plugged that in. Turns out a previous owner had unplugged it. And bingo, my wipers park again, and they do variable intermittent.

I'm pretty sure I just added about $100 to the value of the car.

Recap: Wipers started parking after plugging in Wiper control box (located on access panel under steering column). I made NO change to the motor.

Same prob here. 2 good motors , one is spotless from a 93.

This answered would help me alot:

Did you notice an audible "click" upon parking wipers from controller?

After looking at the box inside the controller (I took it apart), there is only one relay (I am assuming it is shared). As intermittent works on mine, the prob may be elsewhere- the steering column switch knows wipers are off due to the last slow run towards parking... then it doesn't. I have no need to check the motor and contacts again they are good and clean, unbent etc. I am assuming for now the little box inside the controller has multifunction, and not just one relay(that would make for 2 tiny relays in box mentioned- seems unlikely).

I guess I'll be making a cold, snowy trip to the junkyard over break!
