Spliff
I have an 85 gl wagon. Got spark got fuel but it wont start unless you plant your foot and crank it over for 20 seconds and when it does its a got a definite miss. It also starts from a push. My best guess is the distributor is either out or gone tits up. Any suggestions? I just bought the car 2 days ago saw it running 3 days ago like new and its my first subby so my knowledge is pretty minimal. Oh and hello my names Steve ! GoldDiggerRoo
If it's an EA82 it could be your coolant tempature sensor, check the connection, mine was corroded and did the same thing, had to floor it to get it going, especially if it'd been run for a while. NorthWet
Assuming that this is an EA82 engine (OHC), my first check would be for a snapped timing belt (there are 2, so driver's side could still be good and driving the distributor while the other 2 cylinders are doing nothing). The next thing to check is ignition timing to see if it is at least approximately right and doesn't wander all over the place (worn distributor bushings). Then spark plugs and wires. If you have a carburetor, I would doubt that you also have a coolant temperature sensor (CTS), or if you do whether it would cause that much of a problem. (It can on SPFI and MPFI engines). Spliff
So i found a snapped timing belt passengers side. Re-aligned all the marks and still nothing, it actually pops back out the carb. Now are there 2 sets of cam marks on the flywheels or 1? because i had it lined up then tried cranking for a bit then re-aligned what i thought were the same 3 marks and the holeson the cam pulleys were opposite. Im stumped and frustrated.

Line the D/S cam so the alignment mark points straight up. Install the D/S belt. Rotate the engine 360deg until you're back at the alignment marks. This will put the D/S mark down. Line the P/S mark up, and install belt. Rotate engine another 360, check that the d/s is up and p/s is down. Rotate 360 again and verify that the p/s is up. Crank engine and cross your fingers. Frank B
It's been a while but if my memory is right, there are the timing degree marks for the ignition timing, then there are the three lines or marks for the timing belts. This should help. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50768
