Its Alive!

Recommended Posts

The XT is back up and running! I haven't driven it yet (roommate's truck is blocking the driveway ), but its seems to run decent.

Problems I noticed:

1: Exhaust leak before the turbo. I need to take a look at the at the exhaust studs, as I think I have one or two that are stripped.

2: Coolant leak, that I actually just found. The return line for the turbo had a loose hose clamp. It started spraying coolant onto the turbo making for some steamy sexiness.

Otherwise, she's running again. I'm glad. I spent far too many months trying to get this back together (read, beginning of October). The old engine is sitting in shortblock style. Blown rings and all. Anyone want the scrap metal?

I'm at my wits end. Drove the car today. Stumbled really badly, and smelled like burnt coolant. (definitely lost some too!)

Either:

A) The head gaskets didn't seal properly Sad

B) The intake gaskets didn't seal properly (easy fix)

I'm hoping for B. I checked the torque on the intake gaskets and they were to spec, so I'm going to run a compression test and see if I'm losing compression. Sad day.

If the head gaskets didn't seal, I'm just going to sell the f*ing thing. I'm so tired of working on it and I don't have the money to continue.

Was it smoking at all?

How far did you drive it (Any signs of overheating)?

Positive it actually lost coolant and didn't just burp out some air bubbles?

Got a vacuum/boost gauge on that baby? If so what was it reading at idle...

Don't give up yet Mike, could still be something silly or stupid. Have also heard a few people say it took a couple warm-up/cool down cycles to get their new head gaskets to seal. I've never had that problem though.

The stumbling would make me tend to think that maybe the intake gaskets didn't quite seal up (of course could do the same thing with a bad head gasket). Though my parts RX has a TOTALLY blown head gasket and it actually didn't stumble at all, was kinda hard to start but purred like a kitten and smoked out a city block within seconds!
