yet another new soob

i'll have pics tomorrow... '87 DL. sand color... dark brown interior. a little rust around the windshield.. you can see where it's been waxed on the roof and hood. very solid... no wierd noises. except for wind whistling through the windshield and what seems to be OUT the rear. ran fine until I got up into the appalachian mountains... lost ALL power. doing 45 on the interstate for 150 miles=no fun at all. i'll look into that tomorrow. everything works except the emergency blinkers which i desperately needed... lol. $750... about what it's worth. only 174,000 miles and the headgaskets are new, water pump, junkyard radiator, and timing belts are new and it's had a complete reseal done within the last 40,000 miles. runs like a dream as long as you're within 10' of sea level. it's so quiet that without a tach, i have trouble remember when to change gears. it's AMAZINGLY quiet. i got a weber so... i'm getting rid of that crappy hitachi.

i was under the impression that lucas trapped air bubbles and was bad for your engine? oh well, can't hurt anything i guess. tell me what this prob could be... the car ran great when leaving middle tennessee (mostly flat, probably only 150-200ft above sea level) hit a few hills... (get to about 1,100 ft above sea level) and the car has no power. slower and slower and slower... all the way home. I remember the same deal when I hit the rockies area in my 87 carbed gl... but it wasn't NEARLY as bad. some carbs have an altitude adjust mechanism correct? if i'm right... where is it located? i will eventually be doing a spfi swap on it, so it's really not that important i guess. but in the mean time i want some guts. thanks

Lucas is bad for anything other than a tractor differential - low speed applications where there isn't likely to be any frothing action it's alright. Bad for just about anything else. Crap - just like most additives.

so do i need this kit or could I adjust the mixture manually to compensate? just looked at the air filter... looks okay, carb could be a little cleaner though.

 

I don't know what was in the kits. The mixture is not adjustable - the Hitachi's have jets like most carbs. I would guess it's some sort of device that enriches the mixture by changing the float chamber pressure. But that's just a guess. But I can tell you that 1,100 feet above sea level should not require any compensation. 5,000 and up is usually when you need to start changing things. I would do a full carb rebuild and pay special attention to the float settings.

ya don't use it in gear boxes but the 4.3 in my s-10 loves the stuff +2 mpg and it feels allot peppier

Has this car been sitting for a while? I'd replace the fuel filters........ and nix the hitachi

I do not understand that altitude compensation stuff.. my old 87 drove all over new england and upstate new york, back through on rte 2 east (kinda hilly). Below is my new 87 on bald mtn. I creeped up in 2wd, nearly idling and throttling need be, no pings, no problems.

 

below photo is my car at the end of the trail. It is about 1000ft (so it is claimed- I can see that hill for miles and miles sometimes). Behind car is the cables for radio towers.

The most bizarre prob on my carbs and hills 1000ft+ was EGR opening trying to kill me and the engine yet again- after that is chucked into the forest, nature takes over. SIMPLY works very well. I also proved to myself steep angles in a pit (as close to vertical as I never want to get again) with my friend in his spfi soob doing same climb- the carb went the angles no prob, with a burst of rich-- the spfi simply died more than once.

I am convinced FI went too far into conquering nature, concluded with things I have learned from others vehicles and same hill problems (especially newer v8 gas trucks FI that 4 wheel). My cousin-n-law went as far as exploding a plenum on a dodge- no explanation but hills.:confused: guessing o2 is truly sensed, engine leans- then a perfect "Kaboom." Carbs will never ever do that, in fact they do the opposite by using more fuel inefficiently (but keep running). By inefficient, I am not talking all the sloppy either, it is welcome.That is a reason to check your egr setup- it still knows rich and tries to kill itself by opening. And asv liked to zap #4 cyl into no fire, climbing angles at higher speed (another bizarre- even with a clutch fqan to keep it somewhat airy) , that pipe coming out of the head, climbs back around and sits connected to the gadget near distributor. That gone was a huge improvement (even more than egr removed). your ride seems fixable, hopefully a nice find. :)

fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, wires, disty cap, rotor, changed oil, added coolant, filled up and drove about 40 miles around town and used nearly a quarter of a tank :confused: and it actually slows down when I apply full throttle. but otherwise it seems okay as long as I don't apply too much gas?? could the gas be bad? that's what I'm thinking. anywayzz, here's a pic of "Sherman the tank".

New england doesn't have anything that would need altitude compensation. Colorado and other west states have 7,000+ altitude. Heck, even I need compensation for the first few days when I go out there. Doesn't seem bad at first, but then you try running... wheeze and gasp.

okay... still doing the same thing after I drove it a while. seemed okay for a little while, then started again. has power in about the first 1/3 of the pedal... go down any further, and it decelerates. you can hear the engine TRYING... but nothing's happening. have to let off the gas completely and feather it a bit and be really easy on it. does this sound like a fuel pump going out? changed the filter already. Edit: remembered the same thing happening to my first gl... was the fuel pump. will try that next.

okay, just got the new catalytic converter in today. BUT... it's the section of pipe that has the resonator on it, AFTER the y-pipe catalytic converter. which sorda sucks. but i need to find a y-pipe without a cat. i will post that in the wanted section, just wanted to let everybody know what's up... and that this will hopefully fix it.
