2000DuBack
So does the engine rotate clockwise when looking at it from the front on a 2000 Outback 2.5L? Thank you Rich

porcupine73
Yep that's correct. I learned before doing the timing belt by observing the engine whilst running. Is this typically the rotation on most gasoline engines, or does it vary by make/model/etc?

Is this typically the rotation on most gasoline engines, or does it vary by make/model/etc? As far as I know, Hondas are the sole exception to the "all engines spin clockwise" rule. Late model Hondas no longer spin counterclockwise and now have gone to clockwise rotation as well, so they can sell their engines to other manufacturers (like GM.) The one disadvantage to counterclockwise engine rotation is that you can't do the "put a breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt and hit the starter" techinque- when changing the timing belt!
