k guys i got the carb on and i started it up and its struggling ........ but not idling. i sprayed around to see if sealing the carb up was the problem...andd it wasnt. it seems as tho its something in the middle of the carb. not where it bolts to the intake but above it somewhere.....so..... Question #1... will me carb run and drive if a hooked it up wrong?....#2... what could leak in the carburetor thats in the middle of it? thanks -D

You can come up here to take a look at how the carb on my 83 hatch is hooked up. I haven't touched the thing since i last started it, so everything should still be in working order. Send a PM if you're interested.

yeah dude i think maybe.....well actually i was gonna try to get a hold of u for a wheeling trip/wrenchfest out at my place. good wheelin and stuff.....i went wheeling to day and slide off the side of the road and snapped my drivers side mirror, taillights from hitting the fence and bent my push bar straight out pulling me out of the bottomless pit.....im more pissed....but hey live and let learn rite?....anyways yeah the carb still runs like crap and ill try to tighten everything i can on the carb.....oh yeah i got another question for the board...i was driving my wagon in 4th gear today and my gearing is extremely too wide...i was shifting out of 2nd at almost redline and third gear picks up at like 2700rpm:eek: and the same goes for 4th gear.....correct me if im wrong but dont u adjust the coil to get better ratios? and how do u do it? ....thanks -D

Um - you can't change the gear ratio's of a manual tranny. They are set in stone from the factory.

On the carb issue - get a new Weber from Redline. You'll be much better off going that route. Otherwise you'll spend an eternity tinkering with that old Hitachi and probably still end up with a pile of loose, stumbling, garbage.

Dalton, the gears in the EA81's from '83 and later are higher than the earlier years. Just one of the changes from the factory that took place in '83. I replaced my transmission with one from an earlier model, now my gearing is more appropriate for the hilly terrain we live in (I've been able to make it up Spooner Grade in 4th gear since the change:banana: ). Nothing you can do about your gearing without changing the whole transmission. You might compare notes with Jeremy, I believe his wagon is an '84 and has the original higher-geared xmission.

And for crying out loud, be careful..that wagon's in good shape:-p !

Yes - 3rd and 4th are geared higher on the 83+ 4 speed. People complained about the 81/82 giving poor mileage at speeds over 55 MPH so subaru changed 3rd and 4th - the jump from 2nd to 3rd is much too high in the 83+ and makes driving at 25 Mph a pain in the butt. Either you are reving out in 2nd, or bogging in 3rd. And it is the WORST transmission for a lifted rig as 4th gear is almost unusable. The 81/82 4 speed is much better.

Best solution is to just go with a 5 speed. It's the best of both worlds as it's first 4 gears are like the eary 4 speed, and you also have 5th for high speed cruise. Plus the 5 speed does not suffer from the same syncro problems the 4's have, has better reliability, lower LO range, and has a vastly superior shift linkage. Dollar for dollar, the 5 speed D/R is the best upgrade you can get for an EA81.

Y'know, I actually get better highway mileage with the lower geared transmission. Not having to shift to 3rd for every little hill and overpass is much easier on the rest of the car (and less an annoyance to me). The higher RPM is not hurting the car at all, the EA81 being such a well-balanced and smooth engine..I can and do run all day at 3500-4000 , and it's as sweet as my Acura V6 (although not nearly as powerful:rolleyes:  ).

I've considered the 5 speed, but there's not much to be gained (for me)..The earlier 4-speed was a much simpler direct sawp.

Just my 2 bucks
