tuner-automotive
my 92 2.2l Legacy all of the sudden has decided to have its dual elec. fans run ALL the time. Whats up with that? Also my speedo stopped working aswell as my odometer. These are cable actuated , correct? Possible time for new cable?
ferret
Is it an Automatic? If it is, on the passenger side under the hood by the tranny bell housing, you will see where the speedometer cable goes into the tranny. It's held by a clip from the side. There is an adapter that it sets into that goes down into the tranny speedometer gear. That plastic/nylon adapter is probably broken. My 90 Legacy did that 3 times in the 7 years I owned it. Dealer only part. Used to be $4 or $5, but that was back in the 90's. Easy to replace. Cooling Fans, probably a bad relay (stuck on).
Legacy777
In addition, the base adapter piece has an internal shaft that can break. http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru/images/speedocablebase.jpg Get your speedo working, and the fans will work again. tuner-automotive
Really? The fans are connected electronically somehow to the speedo gear? It does seem kind of strange how they bolth happened at the same time.:-\

rverdoold
Had the same last week, replaced the thing and now it works again. But still the speedo jumps, but guess it has more to do with my right foot Only now there is a ticking in my dash in the area of the speedo and it goes with the speed of the car. Still works to bothered taking the dash appart.

Legacy777
The fans coming on is a normal "safety" feature if the ECU loses the speedo reading.
