Impreza 5SPMT in an Outback?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 Outback with a 5sp MT. It pops out of 4th when I back off on the gas. I have a line on a 1999 Impreza 5sp MT from Japan. Will it work. Is it a good idea.
As long as the clutch is the same type (cable or hydraulic) the tranny will work. The manual trannies are pretty much the same, you do need to make sure the that final ratio is the same (i.e. both have 3.900 or 4.111).

No idea if this will help you but all of the JDM 5speed cars ive been in (about 8) have needed 3000rpm exactly for 100kph in 5th gear. Maybe that can help you figure out if the final ratios are similar. It seems this one particular ratio is very common in japanese market Subarus.

I know that the JDM WRX trannies came in 3.900, 4.111 and 4.444 final ratios, the gearing of each gear set may be different, but it will be one of those three final ratios. I know a few of the tranny numbers, so if there is a decal on the tranny bell housing that starts with TY, let me know and I'll see if I have the info on that particular tranny.

Keltik, we would need to know the tire size to come up with the gear ratio. But that would still be guessing because most 5th gears are overdrives and not a 1 to 1 with the final ratio, so we would need to know the 5th gear ratio too.

Silly me, completely forgot tire size in that one - and trying to figure it all out using that seems a bit hard. I guess the transmission should have some kinda marking on it, even if it doesnt match its only a new rear diff to sort things out right?

that is a great source of informatiuon too bad they don/t have one for automatics.
One for automatics would be twice as long, it seems that there is a different automatic application for every model of Subaru sold. An auto for a Legacy Outback is different then for a Legacy GT of the same year, and those are different from an Outback Sports of the same year. True, you can interchange the trannys, but it would be a good idea to swap the TCU also.
