Milemaker13
So, I got everything back together today. I put a new water pump and oil pump seals in there. I fired it up and it still ticks on and off just like before. When I put the mickey mouse seal in, I "lubed" it up with blue RTV. Any ideas why it is still ticking? GeneralDisorder
#1. Never (NEVER) use RTV on the oiling system. Bits can break off, lodge in a small passage in the block, and then you are calling around for a replacement engine. Oil only. #2. Lifter ticking is often a result of one or a combination of these items: Bad oil pump seals Bad cam case o-rings Worn out oil pump Dirty lifters Worn lifters #3. The longer the lifters have been ticking, the more likely they are worn (the ticking causes accelerated wear) and no amount of oil pressure will keep them inflated properly. Only remedy is new or rebuilt lifters. There's a link to a place floating around the board that does them for a few bucks each. GD
idosubaru
i also think the oil pump housing can cause issues. some people have repeated instances of the mickey mouse gasket failing even after cleaninga nd installing a new one. it is only a guess, but i believe the aluminum housing of the oil pump is so thin that if it warps even a tiny amount it could prevent the housing from seating even a new gasket properly. my last two XT6's i've installed new oil pumps on and no issues at all. and as GD said - HLA's can be the culprit. if the sound is isolated to one cylinder, or one HLA then that's a solid indicator that it's possible HLA related and not oil supply related
GeneralDisorder
And the pump is still the same trochoid (SP??) pump design used on the EA81, and from my experience the EA81 pumps want replacing every 100k for best oil pressure. That doesn't always seem to be the case with the EA82's - but it comes down to maintenace too - the same wear factors are present, so it may be time for a new pump. Milemaker13
New pump? I have very good PSI on the guage, maybe its the worn lifters. If I continue to run it this way, is it going to cause engine damage? I've read about a supposed 10% decrease in total engine life, or something. Whats that on 300k? Not much! And as for the RTV I applied, I also read something here about putting rtv where the case split meets some bolts? Whats that about?
Davalos
Have you considered the Deisel Trick?, in case they're clogged with goo?
idosubaru
new oil pumps solve this problem often. your HLA's may be sticking....just a guess of course. some ATF, MMO, seafoam in the oil may help. do a search on TOD, tick of death or seafoam and read up your options. if that doesn't work they'll need to be replaced. never use RTV on the oil pump. there are two tiny spots where the block halves come together...it's a zig-zag patter at 12 noon and 6 oclock behind the oil pump housing. it is a little "rough" here so that's why you put a dab of sealant there. technically you use anaerobic sealant, but these spots are so small RTV would certainly work. they require only a tiny amount of sealant - a pin drop. at each spot only. bgd73
How is the wet spots by cam casings? just tighten them. .5mm is all that is need to keep the hla's quiet. I exceed torques to tighten clearance even more, and it not only quiets noise, increases power due to valves opening a tiny bit more. If the tick goes away, comes and goes, it is nothing to worry about. If tightening external bolts doesn't work, take valve covers off and tighten the internal cam casing ones. You will know a serious hla, oil pump problem- random ticking is not one of them. My latest had a pressure relief bolt that completely unscrewed itslef and fell out onto the ground when I took a valve cover off- that was a sound I won't be forgetting, as ea82's just don't simply make noise, they are simply quiet. The pressure still climbed to 40+ psi and car was quite drivable. Steel bangin around in aluminum needs retorquing every decade or so. Speaking of pump, I finished my experience with 2 ea82's and posted imprtance http://93loyale.com/opump.html
