odd 89 rx tranmission issues

Recommended Posts

Ive searched around abit but was unable to come up with anything realting to my problem... If anyone has any ideas or experience with this problem I would love to hear about it.

I have a 1989 rx with the d/r 5sp locking diff trans...

I removed/replaced my enginge to fix a dead cyl. and a few oil leaks. prior to engine removal there were no driveline issues.

Engine runing, in neutral, high or low, locked or not, I get no noise or drag or anything abnormal.

Engine runing, trans in high or low, any gear, diff unlocked and I get no/very slight movement and some rubbing/drag type noise. no grinding/metal to metal noises

Engine runing, trans in high or low, diff locked, and the car dives fine with no other noticeable noises or issues.

I dove the car for a few minutes, and when trying to unlock the diff, the same problem would occur, when the diff was relocked, I was able to drive normally again.

Hoping for any easy answer on this one. This car has been abit of a money pit for me =/

Thanks, Sam

Mike had the right idea.

It was the front left cv, the shaft came free on the hub side when I lifted the trans to pull the eng. I suppose. I am going to have to pull it apart to reassmble it, luckily all of the pieces are still intact after my drive.

Ive never had a shaft come apart so easily before(Ive done lots of fwd eng swaps), big duh on my part on that one. I had skipped right past a cv falling apart and went onto internal trans issues.

Thinking back I did wrestle the eng and trans around quite abit, the pilot was stuck on the trans input shaft, I eventually unbolted the clutch while the motor was still attatched to the trans.

Thanks for the help.

Sam

Noss also had a strange problem with his 86 Turbo... the shaft came out of the cup very easily... but was a PITA to get back in, we first tried pulling the axle, hammering it back together just to get it mostly into the car and have it fall apart again and not be able to push it back together... a new C clip on the axle end solved this IIRC
