Frank B
As noted in an earlier post, I had removed my EGR valve and it was clogged solid with carbon and was not working at all! The reason I did this was to find the source or reason my hatch would detonate like mad under acceleration and high rpm(above 3000). After cleaning it up as best I could, it now works. I got to drive it about 90 miles yesterday to pick up some course books and take a urinalysis, it's ok I studied for it . Anyway, the car performed great! No detonation at all, and there was a surprising difference in engine performance at higher rpm and highway speeds. I did nothing else to the car, just cleaned the EGR system. So much for the EGR system not effecting the engines performance or operation!?

Subaru_Mechanic
thats a bit more knowledge for me. ive heard if the EGR fails you wouldnt even know. so much for that. great findings! keep up the teaching:headbang:
Frank B
This is the first time I had one clogged up solid. I've had them stick open or the the spring / diaphram break so it opens when it isn't suposed to and man does the engine run like crap then. GoldDiggerRoo
So..... where is the ERG on these things? (never looked for it, never cleaned it) My hatch has been having some running issues, couldn't hurt to clean it I suppose. Pics?
Durania
I second the pics.

GeneralDisorder
Yep - lower combustion temps = less ping = more timing advance = more power. GD
Subaru_Mechanic
the EGR is on the back of the intake manifold. it looks like a little pump. it is bolted on with two 10 or 12 mm bolts.
Frank B
After I got it all back together I regreted not taking pics for the non believers! The EGR is just behind the carb. You'll see a pipe coming off of the passenger side cylinder head for the exhaust gasses, if you can get that off, clean it too.
BoostedBalls
Yeah, the EGR is actually a good thing because it allows spent exhaust into the intake which actually lowers the combustion temps by slowing the burn and controls nitrides in the exhaust. The EGR went south on my Suburban and I had to disconnect it to make it run ok off idle but now it has a slight ping at part throttle. CE light comes on too because O2 sensor reads higher levels of emmisions. Too bad I disabled the one on my RX before realizing the benifits of it. I don't think it will work with the megasquirt that I plan to run on it anyway...
