12340987 Posted January 7, 2007 Share Posted January 7, 2007 One day I started my car and it sputtered to a start, just barely loping along. It drove fine afterwards, but I noticed a lot of white smoke from the back, presumably extra fuel. It smelled really gassy. I got to a schucks later and read the ecu ccode for a bad coolant temp sensor, replaced it and all was well. That was months ago, and today it did the same thing. It does this just in the few seconds when it's firing up. It seems to run fine afterwards. So now I'm wondering what sensors controlled the air/fuel mixture on a cold start? I think it may have slight head gasket leak, as I have to fill the coolant reserve every year or so. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Basically all the sensors other than O2 sensor are used to determine the amount of fuel to inject in open loop: MAP or MAF, intake air temp, throttle position, engine coolant temp, etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

nipper Posted January 8, 2007 Share Posted January 8, 2007 White smoke is water condenstaion, which is normal. As long as it fires right up your fine. Brown or black smoke is rich fuel.
