EA82 water pump hub heights

Recommended Posts

i went through multiple searches and threads reading about this, and it didn't cover some things.

when specifying which EA82 water pump you "think" you need, what exactly is the hub height refering too? is it the distance the shaft extends from the face of the part the pulley mounts to?

and why doesn't any of the parts stores around here carry the longer hub height one for a 1992 loyale and it takes them 3 or 4 days, special order to ship it in? are they that uncommon? they have the other one in stock or can get it the next day.

if you get the associated water pump pulley can you use either one on any engine?

i attached a picture of the removed 1992 Loyale Water pump, next to the other water pump. The disc the pulley bolts to is in a different position, so i need the *other* pump.

i read elsewhere, but didn't seem to sure about it, that either pump can be used if the correct pulley is used with it.

I've never tried it but...can't you just press the hub on further to match the old one or use washers as spacers?

If you originally had the tall one, I suppose you could spacer the pulley out on the short one. But think about it.. we are talking about the alignment of the belt pulleys. If it isn't right, you will eat your alternator and water pump belts like they were beef brisket...

Also, note that the short water pump has holes in the nose, for bolts and nuts.. and the tall water pump has studs. Integral difference between the two, easy way to tell by eyeball. In fact, i am bookmarking this thread for future reference. Grossgary, thanks for the pic.

I think thats a turbo vs non turbo water pump, or one uses N/A pulleys and the other one uses a different style turbo pulley that actually has bolts holding it to the water pump vs N/A and the water pump studs.

Tycho mentioned something about that to me a few weeks ago. Shouldnt matter as long as the belts line up though. might need a few flat washers behind the pulley

This is misleading, if not flat wrong.

XT's- all of them, use the shorter pump. DLs,GLs,and Loyales used either one depending on whether they had "dealer" or "factory" air conditioning. dealer installed air uses the longer pump whilke the factory air uses the shorter one. If you have no Air conditioning it should use the long one.

If your A/C compressor is to the outside of the alternator it is Factory installed air. If A/C condensor is between alternator and PS pump then it is Dealer installed air. others denote it by brand "matsu************a vs. panasonic" I can't remeber which is which from the top of my head.

Using different pulleys does not make it work. Use washers and spacers at your own risk. Just buy the right one! we're talkin about a $40 part!

the one without studs in the picture CAME with studs, they're just not on it in the picture i took so the "stud" versus "non-stud" variety just confuses me at this point. they both have studs.

what do you mean by "long pump" and "shorter pump"? they are both the same overall length. does "long" mean, longer shaft?

it's a1992 loyale with the A/C condensor between the alternator and P/S pump - Dealer installed air. So based on that, you're saying i need the "longer pump". which is what i "thought" i was buying. the funny thing is that the auto parts store lists them by "hub height", i bought the one with the higher hub height. 4 5/16 or 4.320, i bought the larger one and it's not right...so that's why i was asking what the "Hub height" exactly is since that's how the store designates them. hub height has to be the length...4"+.....not making sense.

If you stand it up, with the engine mating face on the table. The hub height is the height from the table to the top of the face where pulley bolts on. You can see the height differences in the pictures above. Forget about studs, sometime aftermarket pumps have em sometimes they don't. "hub" reffered to is the hub that the pulley bolts to.

Does your pulley bolt have 2 sets of bolt holes? I mean does it bolt to the WP hub with 4 and then have four other holes for the fan? If so you need the shorter one. If the pulley and fan go on toghether on the same studs you need the longer one. If you put the wrong pump in you will see the belt being out of alignment.

I know them as 105mm and 110mm. convert that to inches. if al else fails take your old one in and match it up, that is the gauranteed way.

yes, the pumps themselves are the same, it's just the height of the shaft that makes the difference.

GLoyale: Are you sure you don't have the two backwards? I was under the impression that AC inside of the Alternator was factory AC.

I had to replace the WP on my 91 loyale (with AC) this summer, but don't remember how tall the WP was. I'll see if I can find the old one and measure it.

Your're right about the XT,sorry.Forgot about those.

But yes, turbos and n/a are different at the flange with the studs/non-studs.At least from my dealer that's the case.Aftermarket, sure you can expect differences from what the dealer has.

I've shimmed out the shorter one to suit.Needed longer studs though. We just did this a few months back.
