re-tensioning 5sp gearbox pinion shaft

Featured Replies

I am putting the internals from one 5sp into another 5sp casing. What I need to know is how to I re-tension the pinion/output shaft so it doesn't eat the gearbox apart when I use it? The part you tension is the back of the output shaft right? The one with a couple of shims (one gearbox had 2 shims the other had 3.) I don't need to tension the imput shaft do I?

And also how do I tension the front diff? As I am using that out of the other gearbox too. Are those things around the splines just big screws and you turn those to get the right tension? Any idea how to measure that?

Thanks in advance

For this your going to need the factory manual i think. Even i would need the manual in front of me to know what the lash is.

Drive shaft to pinion clearance.... 2mm

Drive pinion shim adjustment code location......... End face

Drive pinion end float gauge........ 0.5mm

Crownwheel to drive pinion backlash...... 0.13 - 0.18mm

Heres what I make out of all this. Top one is the clearance between the output shaft (with all the gears on it) to the pinion shaft running through it.

2nd is where to find how much the case is out and what it needs in the way of shims.

3rd is how much the pinion shaft can move inside back and forth in output shaft.

And last is the backlash between the crownwheel/ring gear and pinion gear. Question is, where do I messure that? There isn't much in my FSM about the inside of the gearbox, only a discription on how the synrchro's work and a diagram of all the gears and shafts.

I'll go check the casing now for that special number...
