Hard Start - Rough Idle

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

My 1991 Loyale wagon has just developed a rough start on cold mornings. Sounds like it not firing on all four. I have to hold the gas down to get it to start and once I get it running for a few minutes it runs fine...like nothing's wrong. Thought maybe water in the gas so I dumped some dry gas in it and filled it up. No luck.

I just had the timing belts replaced and valve cover gaskets too (3 wks ago). Any chance if this being a timing issue?? It's run fine with the new t-belts until just recently.

It's a 1991 Loyale Wagon, fuel injected, 5 speed, 4WD. 240,00 miles.

This car is my winter beater and I REALLY don't wanna take my GTO out of storage!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Update...

Replaced plugs, PCV, airfilter, and CTS. Runs & idles perfect when warmed-up but still starts hard and hesitates when cold. I actually have to hit the gas to get it to start and hold the gas at stop lights to keep it running until warm. Do I need to check/clean the IAC?? Could it be the TPS. What is a TPS and where is it?? Expensive?? I've been driving it for a while now (been to cold and snowy to look at) but I would really like to get to the bottom of this problem...without sinking alot of $$ into it.

Thanks again for all your help.

The TPS is the "throttle position sensor" I now am drawing a blank on where it is... I would definately check the IAC and clean it! Ive read many of problems that sound like this because of a bad or dirty tps, If you have a chance pick up a can of Maf cleaner and help clean up your MAF a bit.

Goatcheez, How do you like this weather eh? Blizzard!:headbang:

Just cause you don't have a CEL, you may actually still have stored codes. it could be a simple vaccuum issue too. Like GD said you need to run d-check and get codes. ussually these things are easy(ussually:-\ )

Where in Milwaukee are you? I am in Kenosha. I could help you look at it. I ussually don't charge for diagnosis(unless it's crazy). I suppose it would be best to drive up in the mornin to look at it cold. What you got goin on Tommorow?

Also, I grew up raising goats and making goat cheese.

You mention changing the FI coolant thermosensor.

Are you sure it was the fuel injection thermosensor or the the dash

gauge temperature sender?

One has a pig tail wire (the thermosensor)

the other a spade plug on connector.

For checking stored error codes.

Try this link from this message board's repair manual

seen athe the right side of this page as the "USRM"

Your connectors are located under the hood by the driver's side hood hinge.

The read out is a small LED on the ECU which under the steering colum.

you must remove the plastic panel to see it.

here is one link from our repair manual

ECU Codes

Try this one also

I replaced the one with the green plug right by thermostat on top/front of motor. Didn't replace the gauge sensor. Thanks for the code info! Were getting smacked with snow/freezing rain here in Milwaukee so I take a look at it once the weather breaks.

Thanks again!!
