86 BRAT
Don't know on legacy, my first clutch lasted 203,500 miles and the subi rep sent it back to subaru:grin:
Smpol19
I've got 136k on the oreginal clutch in my OBS, I drive in DC twice a week, and NYC once a month. I also drive between the 2 a lot so that gets it a lot of highway miles I guess.
funcle
Im doing mine now, and Im at ~146k, it should last as long as the car if its driven correctly. I think when I bought the car, it had allready been abused.
idosubaru
average depends on where you live, what kind of driving you do and how you shift. since it's mostly driver dependent, there's really no average, but a lightly driven clutch won't have any problem making 150,000+ miles. poor aggressive driving and it won't make 50,000. thatswhatshesaid
Ah, but how about this... Do you think the hill holder will reduce the life of the clutch?
unibrook
My 2001 Forester had its clutch replaced due to slipping at 75k because the previous owner rode the clutch too much. Cars that I have owned never get clutch replaced. But then, I am flatlanding and not towing, no heavy loads etc.
dpoppeli
Ditto on clutch riding. I know the previous owner rode it and we replaced it at around 60k! I was amazed. We'll see how long the replacement lasts. I tow loaded trailers of firewood in hilly terrain. I wish I had the low-range that the Australians get in theirs. The clutch pedal goes almost to the floor before it kicks in, but it doesn't slip and I've put 3k on it like that. Living life on the edge. DerFahrer
Ah, but how about this... Do you think the hill holder will reduce the life of the clutch? The Hill-Holder should increase the life of the clutch, as you don't have to rev up extra high to catch yourself on a hill. My Legacy's clutch went out at exactly, and I mean exactly, 110k. I used to downshift a lot though.
Takami826
My '89 Justy's clutch lasted until about 110K. It probably would have lasted much longer but I was a kid and I learned to drive stick the day I drove (lurped) it off the lot, so I am sure for a few thousand miles it went thru abuse more severely than typical. destey
146k miles on my '98 Outback. The clutch pedal goes almost to the floor before it kicks in There's adjustment for that where the cable meets the fork (assuming you have cable). I added a couple of nuts as a spacer to remove slack, then adjusted the clutch sensor. My pedal throw is half what it was stock.
yohy
1993 Legacy L wagon 5spd had 183,000 when we traded it for the 04 Forester. Clutch was perfect, no slippage, good feel. Dealership was astounded that it was the original clutch.
soobmater
148k on stock clutch in 85gl wagon, and i drive very aggresive... Although thats only been the last few thousand miles, im sure it was driven pretty easy before that..
mattocs
second owner of mine. 65k on the first (I don't think they could drive) 80k on the second. I've had it for 50k miles now. Still working great. My mom had over 200k on her origianl clutch. I'd say 150k sounds about right if you can drive right.
zyewdall
My dad's 96OBW has 163k on the original clutch. Slipping a little bit but still driveable. My '89GL had the clutch replaced at 140k, and I'm up to 219k on the replacement now. Depends on how and where you drive.

AlpineRaven
150,000 miles now, still original clutch previous owner said, but had throw out bearing replaced about 10,000miles ago - He didnt remove the clutch as he didnt want to upset the alignment - suspect have a little bit left. newg
I have 169K on my 98 OBW clutch and I have this stupid story about my clutch. In Aug 05, I did an oil change and put in Mobile One and that winter, my clutch made all kinds of noise..slipping, chatter, I could hear the throw-out bearing working and everything. I thought it would blow out at any time. I went all winter like that. Next oil change, put the high mileage Castrol back in and have not heard a peep out of my clutch since. I know its not related, but man this is weird......
Slegacy96
Mine went at 70K, 1000 miles after I bought the car. But, the woman who owned it before me was 4'10" and my conclusion was that she wasnt pushing it down all the way, thus leading to an early demise. Had to have it towed to the dealer.
