OK, I just bought a '92 SVX, and it just had the five speed put in and every thing works great, except the brakes. The've been blead and blead again and again, but still not working well. The only thing I can think of is the booster. The booster for the SVX would have needed cut and mechined, so we decided to put the booster out of the '94 tranny donor Legacy. the booster is just alittle bit smaller, but should work. Right? And one last question, is there a difference between an ABS and a NON-ABS booster? Thanks to all for any help.

First test the booster.

With the car off pump the pedal ten times. Then put your foot on the brake and start the car. The pedal should move to the floor. If it does then its the master cylinder.

We will try this, and what is a check valve?

What type of check valve did the SVX booster use? The legacy has one in the hose that goes from the manifold to the booster.

only allow air to flow one way, providing the booster with vacuum but not allowing the vacuum to escape when throttle is depressed.

Thats what I figured, and thinks, we figured it out, and now the beast will stop.

Bad booster won't make the brakes not work it'll just make the pedal effort required to stop the car increase. My guess is you either have a bad leak somewhere or a bad master cylinder, and I'd lean towards a bad cylinder since unless you have a leak in both sides of the brake circuit, you'd just lose one front and the opposite rear brake, not everything. Also might try bleeding it with a vacuum bleeder, sometimes if there is a lot of air in the system it can't be bled manually. Does the master cylinder have bleeder screws on it? If so, bleed it first or you will get nowhere!

You can also try gravity bleeding the system, that is open the bleed screws and wait for fluid to drip out.

A bad Booster will make the pedal incredibbly hard and increase braking force, and stopping distance. You have to rule out the booster before you blame the master cylinder.

From having both go bad, ild rather have the booster fail then the MC. The MC can be goofy, from intermittent no pedal, to a normal pedal and nothing happens, to pedal to the floor.

a Booster will be fairly consistant.
