Im lookin to buy Reason's aftermarket guages seeing as how his Legacy is totaled.:-\ The issue is that the speedo goes up to 140, where as mine only goes up to 120. Therefore my speedometer would need to be re-calibrated. One Subaru place told me that they didnt have the tools. Another told me that you cant re-calibrate them, even in the newer ones. And auto electric specialist told me that it should just plug in, which I realized later doesnt make any sense since Im not replacing the actual speedometer itself. A friend of mine told me that he got bigger wheels on his '01 Dakota and he just went to the dealer and plugged it in and no problem. So Im trying to figure out who here is actually correct. nipper Posted January 29, 2007 Share Posted January 29, 2007 Now i played with this. I forgot how it turned out. But the spedo is made up of two parts. There is the spedo head, and the board which it plugs into. The 140mph spedo has a different electrical connection then the 120. When you get the gauges, get the pigtail off the back of the cluster also. It is a two wire plug in the center of the back of the cluster. Just have him snip it. When you hook it up to your car, you use that pigtail and it should work. Wire it in temporarily by striping the wires, inserting them in your connector and taping them up. you wont hurt anything. Just do what i suggested. nipper The problem is that I need a 140 mph speedo. The owner of this one drove it around with his 120, which I am currently holding in my hand. If I could find a wrecked '96 Legacy with 90,000 miles on the odo. that would work. I dont know why Subaru changed their speedometers in '97. I told you the only differnce between a 120 and a 140 seems to be the connector in the back of the cluster, and that you should get that too. They look like they use the same VSS sensors and pulses, and all the black magic is done in the cluster. I had those exact same guages in my 95 wagon, up until one of the wires broke off, they are somewhat delicate, so take care when handling them near the area the wires go to the actual guage. Thanks for the tip. Any idea how many miles you have on odo? My car is gonna look real screwed up on record. Had 80,000 and had the speedo replaced cause it broke, so I started back at 0. I think it had 140k or in that area, I replaced the whole cluster with one from a 95-96 L because I the brighton with no tach, might be possible to roll it back to get it close to where you would like it. Not to worry then, most people don't even think about that kind of stuff when buying a car. A friend of mine got screwed over on a 00 honda prelude and paid way more than he should have because the odometer had been changed, the dealer knew about it but fail to inform him of it. It's not too uncommon to find flood damage cars on lots either. But some time back there were several cars damaged at a local ford/used lot when we had a pretty decend flood here. At least ten of them showed up at a small lot and they claimed them to have never been in water at all... After a long discusion I pulled up the carpet in a sebring and showed him what I knew, end of dicussion he walked away mad as hell. Anyway, I check where that speedo 'should' have been, but my dad has been moving stuff around in the building. Would have tried more but a car hit some black ice and clipped a power pole knocking out power on the block until after i left. I'll scrunge around some more over the weekend.
