another phase one failure thread.

Recommended Posts

so supposedly this friends of mine vehicle has been toasted.i have read several of these threads and have not found one thing.

when you want to replace the engine instead of rebuild it,which is the most compatible?as far as 2.2 goes?

anyone?the vehicle is a1997 legacy.i dunno the mileage right now.from what i gather it was ran hot more than once.possibly due to a thermostat placed backwards or something to that effect.(what is believed happened)i don't know if that is even possible.however, the casse is the case.

what motor do i drop in for them?can i just change an engine wiring harness over to the 2.2?cheers, brian

not that i doubt you guys.just curious what brings you to this conclusion.is it just that a phase 2 ,2.2 will fit .or specifically that year combo?

i deal with ea series cars on a daily basis, just not ej....so i am not a total idiot.just not up on these issues.cheers, brian

The '97 2.5 has EGR and duel port exhaust. The only 2.2 with EGR and duel port exhaust was built in '95. '96 they went to signal port exhaust.

If you want a direct replacement 2.2 for a '97 2.5, that is the only one.

You can us other MY 2.2L engines but it is not a direct fit. You will have to mix and match parts. Like exhaust, intakes, Evap emission lines, drill & tap earlier heads for EGR (this can't be done with some early heads). None of which is a big deal if you have good acess to spare parts.

so my friend got an ej22 from a 95 today.the engine is getting dropped off tomorrow.the car by friday.should be fun.not a total stranger to the 2.2 .from what i gather...it should be smooth.gettin a timing belt, idlers(gear too),front and rear main, water pump, and such to go on the yard motor.it has 130 thou on it.no sign of leakage and excellent compression readings(175-185 all 4).i imagine this motor will get him several thou more.stoked to help out.it's really fun when you realize that you can actually do something that most won't.;)

Watch out for the idler tensioner on the 2.5 If possible, use the one off of the 96 engine which is the seperate hydro- cylinder style. The j/y engine may have the newer style, which has the hydro tensioner integrated into the arm that the pully is mounted on. This style must be very carefully compressed. Push too hard, the seals inside blow. It sucks.

No, you can use newer but 95 with auto tranny is only year with dual exhaust port and EGR, others will work but may require using the donor Y pipe as well.

not to mention 96 was the last year for 2.2 non-interferrence engines.

95 - 98 will work. 96 is single port exhaust, you'll need the y-pipe. i don't know about 97 or 98 2.2, but subaru would be smart if both 2.2 and 2.5 used the same y-pipe for those years.

all the dual port ej's have the same exhaust manifolds, as long as you source a dual port engine you shouldn't have to worry about it, also weren't a lot of the ej22 auto's equiped with the egr system, i could almost swear the motor i got a few years back from a 90-91 auto had egr, but i could be wrong
