On-demand 4-wheel drive problems

Recommended Posts

Sounds as if the center case is binding.

This will result if your tires are not matched.

Check all four for the same - size, brand, and pressure.

This can also happen if you use the 4wd on surfaces that

provide too much traction.

To relieve the bind select reverse and back up for twenty feet or so.

Hope this helps.

+1, execpt I don't think the brand and pressure matter too much. Also if that all seems right we had the same problem with my brothers wagon when got it because it had a 3.7 ratio diff in the back and a 3.9 ratio in the front.

As for checking your front diff ratio, I have no idea.

Most of our cars should match front and back. This must have been a custom setup. I understand that in a straight mud runner, a faster front axle will help pull the front around where you want to go. But if it was locked on pavement, it would fail in short order. Did you guys swap it back or something?
