Uberoo Posted February 2, 2007 Share Posted February 2, 2007 I just found a set of old VDO gauges for my Ej22 conversion.Temp,Oil pressure,and a voltmeter... I think they are 2 1/8.They fit the style of the Ea82 gauges well...So do you trust the factory voltmeter? Prospeeder Posted February 2, 2007 Share Posted February 2, 2007 well, anything normal temp is about 190-200 degrees, overheating would be 260 is probably the red zone. Snowman Posted February 2, 2007 Share Posted February 2, 2007 The factory voltmeters are CA-RAAAAAAAP. Some of them read low, some of them read high, and some just spaz out. General rules of thumb for charging voltage: It should be between 13.5-14.5 volts most of the time, but that can vary by design a little bit. If it's charging over 15 volts, something is wrong and you could cause some expensive damage very quickly. At idle, the voltage should remain at least .5 volts above open circuit voltage (engine off, accessories off)...since OCV ideally should be 12.6, anything below 13 volts will not keep the battery charged. For operating temp, I think the EJ22 has a 190 or 195 thermostat. It should get up to that temperature relatively quickly. If the ECM is controlling the cooling fan(s), it usually does a very good job of maintaining a constant temperature, so it shouldn't go much above 200 ever. If you're using the EA82 thermoswitch to control the fan(s), which I don't personally recommend, it may get a few degrees warmer than that. kingbobdole Posted February 2, 2007 Share Posted February 2, 2007 NO As far as temp goes... my wagon hovers right around 190-200 ish all day(SPFI EA82) and Mike turbo usually ran about 200-220 or so IIRC... any thing above 240 is not good. If it goes a little below the 12, that means the alternator isn't working (usually because I've gotten too much water on the belt). If it goes much higher than about 13 on the guage, something's wrong. Your's may be different, but it probably has a 'normal' place it should sit. Dunno about the temp gauges. 190 to 210 is where my VW rabbit runs. My suby sits right at 1/4 guage, but my friends almost identical car sits at 1/2 guage. Either way, it tends to always sit the same place. For example, if mine gets to 1/2, that's bad, because it's not normal for mine. Sooo..... I guess my conclusion is that the OEM gauges are pretty good indicators, once you figure out what's normal, but you can't just go from one suby to another and expect to be able to tell anything from them. Cougar Posted February 4, 2007 Share Posted February 4, 2007 I think the voltmeter is fine. It is the wiring to it that makes the readings show a little different than what the actual battery voltage is. My meter indicated about 1 volt lower than the actual battery voltage due to wiring losses to the meter. It really didn't bother me. You could still see what was happening with the charging system without any problem. As was stated previously, it is more a reference than a absolute measurement.
