Can't get the brake hub off?

Recommended Posts

Went to Kragen to get new studs and a lugnut, since my threads got semi stripped when the wheel almost fell off yesterday. Took off the wheel, the big bolt, the washer and the big angled washer, but the hub doesn't want to come off it just wiggles a little. To I just need to pound it with a rubber mallet a some more or should I disconnect something else?

as in....brake drum?

yep, the 'axle' nut is all that holds it on (I know...I had the nut fall off while I was driving....).

get a rubber mallet, and go to town on it. or a regular maul. just need to shake it loose.

if it's really tough, you may need a big puller. I've never had to on a subaru, but we have on other cars (caravan, Jettas, etc.)

on the back side of the backing plate should be a small rectangular rubber piece (at least a hole where one would fit). Take it out, then use a small screwdriver to push straight in.

That should release the tension on the brake shoes, and allow you to remove the hub.

As the hub wears, it develops a small rim along the edge that the shoes can hang up on. So, you want to retract the shoes below this rim.

I guess this will have to wait til AZ... the net went down for a while and I put everything back together... I have 4 lugnuts on tight now so I'm sure I'll be fine. Thanks, see yas later
You should be fine if they got tight. Every time you stop check them:cool: Good luck keep us informed. When you do get time make sure you get to sedona it is A MUST SEE. I lived there for 3 years and loved it. The bad part is that it was to hot for me to do my trade of a pipe layer.
