GeneralDisorder
Worn shaft bushings. The air gap between the reluctor and pickup isn't steady. GD
Hodaka Rider
Yup, pick out a good used one of find a machine shop to re-bush it. I did my EA-81 and it worked nice.

old sub freak
i checked for play by trying to rock the shaft around,it seemed good.could this still be messed up even though the bushings seem ok? todd thanks guys!
GeneralDisorder
It doesn't take much, and without removing the distributor it's unlikely you would be able to feel the play as the shaft is engaging the cam drive gear, and isn't free to flop about like it would if you removed it from the engine. 1/32" is more than enough to cause a lot of problems. The bit you are refering to as a "vent" is not. It's a retard port for the feedback carb equipped EA82's. Leave it open (not capped) and just use the inner port as that one is the advance. old sub freak
hey gd,thats cool.does it matter what they look like inside.i compared 2 of them and the stuff inside the dist. were different. just 2 ways to do the same thing? thanks todd
GeneralDisorder
Different brands probably - Nippon-Denso vs. Hitachi. But yes, they do the same job. GD
