msmithmmx
I am getting ready to do the timing belt on my 2.2. I need to pull off the right side pulley to do the cam seal that is leaking like. Once it’s off and if it spins a little is there a method of getting it back to top dead center. Also what cylinder is Number 1. I suppose I could mark it but is there a better way. Also, I need to remove the crank pully, any pointers on this?
tcspeer
The # 1 is the front left as you face the engine from the front. Use a compression gauge to find when it is up on compression, then when you remove the front covers you will turn the crank just a little to line the marks, this will put the pistons in the center of engine so then you will be able to turn that right cam pully around a complete turn cockwise if you lose your mark. The cam is always right when the mark is lined up. As far as taking the crank pully off I use the big chain wrench from Harbor Freight to hold it while removing the bolt. Then you must wiggle it off and you may need to use a small screwdriver to help but go easy. Make sure you do not use the arrow on the crank spocket for the timing mark, the timing mark will be the line that is on one of the spocket tabs. Also If you do not have a Haynes manuel get you one I done my first timing belt job with only that information. I am getting ready to do the timing belt on my 2.2. Skip
Danger danger! People really should get in the habit of giving us readers the courtesy of telling us the car and YEAR of the vehicle. In this case if it is a 1997 or later 2.2 it is interference and problems could result in turning things when they shouldn't be turned. TDC has no relevance in setting the timing belt timing BTW. Here is a good read and please I am trying to help not chastise you. http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/2.2SingleOverWin01.pdf
tcspeer
When you line the marks up you are not at T.D.C. and you can turn that right cam pully as much as you want clockwise. Is this not correct? Danger danger! People really should get in the habit of giving us readers the courtesy of telling us the car and YEAR of the vehicle.
