nipper
One of them is built into the spedo head, the other is on the transmission (if this is an automatic). nipper
Skip
as Nipper said but to continue VSS#1 is in the rear of the tranny so it could be a wiring issue - broken/ corroded conn. ect. VSS#2 is in the speedo head.
njdrsubaru
its def the VSS1, thats the code that the comp is giving me is there a problem running like that? there is nothing wrong how it shifts or anything...
nipper
If its an automatic, you wont have AWD without both VSS operating. nipper

ericem
Try reseting the TCU as well, by unplugging the battery for 45mins.

Skip
This may not help but the VSS#2 in my automatic 97 OB is not working due to a bad drive gear. It is stuck in AWD because of this problem. I thought it would be the opposite but?? I have the FWD fuse in to overt the problem. Have you noticed if it is in 4wd all of the time? We are talking torque bind or other symptoms? Might want try spinning the tires then put the FWD fuse in and give it a whirl.
njdrsubaru
No other symptoms, no torque bind or anything the only thing i've noticed since its that the first gear takes a little long to shift into second, but that may be the cold weather. I've noticed that when the front wheels start to spining the rear wheels kick in right away, so there is a 1 or 2 seconds delay there but definetely not stuck in AWD, i tried in the snow and at the pine barrens last saturday. the power light blinks whenever i start the car, and when i pull the code its code 32 ... VSS1, how long do I have to fix that till it causes any major problems? and does anybody know the part number for that sensor? just in case... but tomorrow i'm gonna get under the car remove the sensor and see if all the wires and connectors are in ok condition... i'm just afraid that i'm gonna cause any more damage driving like that This may not help but the VSS#2in my automatic 97 OB is not working due to a bad drive gear. njdrsubaru
ok so this morning my car wouldnt shift gears, so i was thinking damn the tranny went, nahhh it was both VSS's gone, went ot the JY and got some sensors... VSS1 had a broken wire and VSS2 i believe was disconnected by vibration i think, so i changed the VSS1 and reconnected VSS2 i think and the car is all good again no codes at all. isnt it weird how 2 sensors can destroy a car? next step is the lift cheers Neo
