Cost of Timing Belt replacement

Recommended Posts

Almost time to do the timing belt on a 2002 outback. Currently have 90k . I also intend to replace the cam seals ; oil seals ; water pump; drive belts as well as a coolant change and new hoses. Don't know if I am missing anything. Anybody have similiar job done? Will use an independent mechanic in the Southern , Ct. Area. Labor is around $65.00 hour here. I intend to purchase the timing belt and water pump from Subaru to ensure quality and fit and will give to shop.

Did similar job myself last summer on '00obw. Also consider replacing the geared idler near the water pump. You'll also need a new gasket for the water pump. You can reuse the tensioner; some people simply replace with a new one but of course it's near $100. Search out one of the online Subaru dealers who wholesales parts; will almost certainly be less than what the local dealer wants. Some people say reseal the oil pump at this time and replace it's o-ring.

You can reuse the tensioner, but why take the risk (see other p[osts on tensioners going bad).

When i had it done on my legacy it was 600 - 650.00 ( i also needed a harmonic balancer) . That was basically replacing everything under the front covers, money well spent for another 106,000 miles of peace and quiet.

You may want to by the tensioner yourself on

To save some bucks.
