Fix It Or Part It?

Alright, I would like some opinions on this. I just picked up an 88 GL10 Turbo wagon. It has all the bells and whistles, diff lock 5 speed, LSD, sunroof. It also has a blown head gasket and possibly a cracked head. My question is what should I do with the car? Should I fix it and sell it? If so, what do you think its worth? Should I part it out? The reason I ask is that I might have a line on an RX, but I have no info on it. HELP!!

trust me, these cars are not worth just fixing and selling, because theres not alot of resale for them. and the ammount of work and parts will get pretty close to what you can get for it and u may not make much of any money if any. If your gonna fix it, drive it, much better investment

For god sake do something with it. Fix it up or part it out. I'd like to get that LSD:grin:

 

Despite prospeeders bad ummm,...luck? These cars can be reliable and good daily drivers. My 89 turbo wagon is. Especially if you do a thourough reseal/recondition of the motor. Sounds like the perfect time if it needs HG's already. If there are lots of other issues, like rust, brakes, driveshaft, wheel bearings etc it could get expensive. But if it is generally good with blown HGs it would be worth it me thinks. as far as making money, good luck

In my expereince, here in the Great NW the older Subarus aren't worth the scrap-metal they're built out of because of the proliferation of newer (97 and up) ones for cheap $$$$.

 

Having said that: the older ones have a center diff lock, parts are plentiful, we don't have a rust problem, and they're easy to work on. Plus you can run them into stuff and not feel too bad about it, and stock tires cost $100/set :grin:

 

SO: if you like the car, fix it and drive it; you'll only be in it a few hundred bucks and have a great reliable car people in other parts of the country would pay big bucks for. If you don't like it, part it out and be done, because resale is :eek:

sell it to me..dang all the good cars or in oregon, arrrgg. ive been looking for 2 years for a 4wd wagon, i have 2 subies that are all rusted out, good engines under 100k, looking for ruct free cores..lol. it would cost me more to drive out and get it , than its worth.. bummer

I would be more then willing to take it off your hands for you :banana:

 

If the body is in goof shape, everything works, and you like the car, fix it and enjoy it.

You rarely make any money if you fix and sell when you have a cracked block.

You guys are scaring him. It's not that hard or expensive to swap a motor. And there is no reason to think it needs anymore than HGs at this point. You don't even know if the heads are cracked. I've done 4 Turbo HG changes, and only once did I encounter a head that was cracked all the way to the coolant passages. The other 3 I resealed and away they went. None have come back with problems.

Who the heck said anything about a cracked block? I have never even seen an EA82 crack a block. A few I've seen throw rods. But he would know if it had a thrown rod. Big hole in the top of block:dead:

Hey G-man,is this the one you just posted in the marketplace that I replied to?

 

To tell the truth,it looks like mine has could have a cracked head too.Wizzing like crazy,like no HG I've ever seen before.

If the RX and this wagon are of the same type, meaning the electrcial differences in the early to later years. Then I say part out the wagon but keep anything like electrical sensors, fuel injection stuff, turbo etc. The RX is worth more, or more desirable anyway, than the wagon.
