carfreak85 Posted March 6, 2007 Share Posted March 6, 2007 I want to put a full time 5 speed tranny in my EA81, and after reading GeneralDisorder's write up on putting EA82 rear DOJs on EA81 rear axles. I got to thinking, "Would it be possible to do this to the front axles as well except using EA82 25 spline cups?" I imagine it would, but just wanted to ask around. Because I put a 5 speed w/ rear lsd and 4 wheel disc brakes in my brat. I have to have them made still but I am told they will work just fine. Basically, I want to know if its physically possible to put 25 spline EA82 inner cups on the inboard side of an EA81 axle and if it will last. 86BRATMAN Posted March 7, 2007 Share Posted March 7, 2007 I don't see why the wouldn't last. All you are doing is swapping cups, not the whole joint. Now this is something that has been missing in my knowledge.. Are the 2WD axles the 3 roller bearing style, and the 4WD axles the 6 ballbearings in the race design? Or what? I know my front axles in my 4WD Brumby/Brat have the 6 ballbearing style and the 89 AWD Liberty/Legacy uses the same design only with 25 spline cups like the FT gearboxes. I put them together about a month ago and didn't really pay to close of attention. I just knew they worked from reading up on here. Also it is about an 95% chance they have to be oem 2wd axles. ALL the parts stores here list the exact same axle for both 2wd and 4wd. On the 2wd hatch I picked up for parts I got really lucky with the one replacement axle that was actually the correct size.
