How can I tell if an EJ is an OBDI or OBDII if the engine is out of the car and the owner doesn't know what year it came from? Any telling marks? Thanks for the help.

I'd think the engine is just an Engine. The OBD part is with the computer and electronic. Yes, there may be more holes for things like Knock Sensor and CTS or what ever.

I assume this is an engine complete with manifold, harness, etc. The OBD II cars have three(?) connectors on the wiring harness on the passenger's side by the trans bellhousing. The earlier cars had the harness connectors on the driver's side. (Assuming left hand drive US spec cars.)

Also, if each cylinder head only has a single exhaust port, it must be OBD II, as the single port heads were introduced in '96. Dual port heads could be found on a pre '95 OBDI engine or a 1995 obd II engine- the only year for dual port & OBD II.

One sure sign of OBDII is the presence of EGR system, however with 2.2, it was only installed on cars with auto transmissions. Then of course from 1997 on there are different valve covers and spark plugs are in the center. Also, if the engine is from 1994 or older, it's not OBDII. Some telltale signs: decorative cover (or at least brackets to hold it), cam and crank sensors with pigtails, box-shaped steering reservoir.
